History[edit]

I've stopped homily being a redirect to sermon (oration). From here, it seems to have quite an interesting history. Can somebody who knows about this please flesh it out? Gaurav 14:58, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

What is a Homily?[edit]

The article never explains what a homily is. Said: Rursus 10:58, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology, distinction from sermon[edit]

Someone should integrate this information from the OED into the article with the appropriate format, etc.:

Etymology: < French omelie (12th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), modern French homélie, < ecclesiastical Latin homīlia, < Greek ὁμῑλία intercourse, converse, discourse, (eccl.) sermon, homily, < ὅμῑλος crowd, throng, < ὁμοῦ together + λη crowd, band, troop.

First citation: c1386 Chaucer Parson's Tale ⁋1014: "Of Omelies and moralitee and of deuocion."

Interestingly definition a. distinguishes homilies from sermons as being practical rather than intellectual, aimed at "spiritual edification of the hearers, rather than for the development of a doctrine or theme." On the same distinction, there's an 1883 citation from P. Schaff tr. Herzog Encycl. Relig. Knowl. 1611 "In the Western Church the terms ‘sermon’ and ‘homily’ were at first used interchangeably; but in time each came to designate a special kind of discourse. The sermon was a discourse developing a definite theme. The homily pursued the analytical method, and expounded a paragraph or verse of Scripture." JKeck (talk) 01:57, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
