I recommended that a poll be set up on this topic some time ago, and getting no response I decided to start it up myself. The basic issue is, should the page Donations for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake be protected? On the one hand, it guarantees that we won't have problems with scam artists taking advantage of this page. On the other hand, this page may still need additions, and blocking it will cause problems. What do you think?

  • The possibility of scams is huge and dangerous, and I find that we cannot allow that to happen. It is our moral responsibility if scam artists list false charities that divert money from the relief effort. →Iñgōlemo← talk donate 04:41, 2005 Feb 14 (UTC)
  • I somewhat agree but oppose blocking it yet. Two reasons. First: There have been scam pages posted and various vandaliztions but they have corrected quickly by a wide variety of people. Second: Just when I think I have found all the reputable charities involved in the relief effort, I find several more. User:Bldarter
  • Protecting this page will do nothing to stop scammers and is inconsistent with the nature of Wikipedia. Brianjd | Why restrict HTML? | 02:58, 2005 Mar 26 (UTC)
