First of all, you can sign your name by using 4 tildes like this: ~~~~. As far as how we spot vandals, its not really a big deal. they usually write something like "Paul is gay" on the top of a popular page, which generally remains about 30 seconds. The smarter vandals write creative and funny stuff, which sometimes ends up in BJAODN (link above). The real problem is well meaning editors who can't accept when they are wrong or POV about some particular, and waste alot of time and energy making a fuss. There are also internet trolls, which have been a source of similar stress, altho IMO less so since you can usually realize what their up to pretty quick. Its the well meaning you or me who happens to be wrong and not want to accept it thats the real trouble, IMO. Spelling errors and such don't matter much at all, you have to understand that a great many of our editors are english second language, school children, etc... and for every one of them, theres a couple of folks like you to catch it. My spelling is awful, BTW ;) I knew you were new here because your user talk was in red, meaning no one had edited it yet. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have, and of course the article talk pages are particularly helpful. To be honest you will prob figure out most of what you need to know simply by doing, and the links I gave should fill in most blanks. The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications.
