Image tagging[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Waterloo and city line.png. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GFDL, or {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) Thanks so much, hike395 14:53, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Associations[edit]

I was unaware of these associations, what are they? ed g2stalk 16:34, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The Nazis forced Jews to wear armbands with most typically with black Stars of David on them so they could be easily identified. Blue Stars of David were also used, but these were less common. Regardless, the blue Star of David is not specifically related to Israel. Jayjg 17:26, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I think most people associate a blue Star of David with the Israeli one. A black and white illustration is about as netural as you can get. I thought most people associated the yellow star with the Nazis. ed g2stalk 17:30, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
The background was most commonly yellow or gold, but the stars themselves were most commonly black. I don't think a blue star is a political statement about Israel, you see it in lots of Chanuka decorations. Jayjg 17:40, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Yukos logo deletion[edit]

Why do you want to delete the Yukos logo in the English wikipedia? There is no explanation on the "images for deletion page". Note: if there is a way to link directly to an image on the Russian wikipedia, please inform me on my talk page. Andrew pmk 18:56, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Deleting images (Cox's Bazar)[edit]

Please do not delete my thumbnails without asking, they are often special sharpened thumbnails, or palletted PNG's. ed g2stalk 20:25, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Please don't bother picking your bones with me. I was only deleting images that others had listed for speedy deletion. It was in a list of thumbnails that a user had listed, all of which were useless, except for your apparently. If you can refer me to the name of the image that I deleted, I'd be more than happy to look in the logs to see who listed it for deletion. -- user:zanimum
If images are listed for deletion (and especially speedy deletion), it is your responsibility to check them out as an admin if you take it upon yourself to delete then as the process is irreversible. But no worries in this case, no harm done. ed g2stalk 02:42, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Flag fold image[edit]

SOURCE: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html ; I claim fair use on the grounds that the flag itself is public domain, as is the process for folding the flag--an illustration of how to do it can certainly be copyrighted, but it using it in an encyclopedia article about the flag and how to fold it certainly seems fair. jengod 21:34, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

Image tag[edit]

Re: Image:Ed_g2s.png -

This is for sure you, for sure taken by you. Could you give it whichever tag you wish ( {{pd}}, {{gfdl}}, whatever) so it doesn't get accidentally bit-blasted?

Thanks, Denni

Another user has added the tag. I am okay with that.iFaqeer (Talk to me!) 22:23, Dec 21, 2004 (UTC)

Commons - images from sxc.hu[edit]

You wrote me a message concerning the images from sxc.hu I had loaded up to commons and I saw that these pictures have already been deleted. I thought the license is ok if the image-page there says "There are no usage restrictions for this photo." (example: [1])? So, it is not? --Tsui 11:33, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC) (commons:User:Tsui or de:Benutzer:Tsui)

Arsenal F.C.[edit]

Hi there Ed. Intrigued co-editor of Arsenal F.C. reporting here. Just curious as to why Jordan, Svard, Garry, Djourou, Skúlason, Smith, Fowler, Larsson, Owu-Abe, and Lupoli no longer have numbers assigned to them.

Have I missed something?

Thank you for your time
Bobo192 17:00, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Gotcha. We were merely using sources with conflicting information: I was using http://www.soccerbase.com/teams2.sd?teamid=142 in order to edit the numbers which were missing from the squad. I'm happy eitherway - I've been creating the articles anyway, so they're still there. That's all that matters.
Again, thank you. Just a case of using different sources, which is cool.

365 Thank yous[edit]

Hi Ed, I was just thanking mav for updating the calendar templates for 2005. So I thought I should stop by and say thanks to you too, as I get the impression you did the initial ground work on most of these. Its the sort of thing people take for granted, but they really are very useful. -- Solipsist 13:33, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Admin power abuse[edit]

(Reverted edits by Maveric149 to last version by Ed g2s)

Why the hell are you using an admin tool in an edit dispute? It is both rude and an abuse of your admin user rights. --mav 05:12, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Why exactly do you think this nominated picture is too small? Is there some sort of rule that requires featured pictures to be larger than my computer screen that I don't know about? It really annoys me when people say this, so I'd like to see where they're getting it from. Can you help me? Mgm|(talk) 17:45, Jan 22, 2005 (UTC)

  • The thing is about 700x400 pixels! I can't even fully view it without removing menu bars. Will making it larger really make that much of a difference for the quality? Mgm|(talk) 23:38, Jan 22, 2005 (UTC)

Image:Arsenal stadium fisheye.jpg[edit]

Greetings Ed. Could you tag Image:Arsenal stadium fisheye.jpg? Thanks, – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 20:22, Mar 3, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry to see you didn't want to take credit for you efforts here :) So I reverted to the original image, hope you don't mind... Duk 11:00, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hey Man, why do you keep reverting this image? Is the original screwed up? Your edit makes the face look green, but maybe the problem is my monitor.
Generally, its a good idea to talk over things before reverting other people's work. Duk 15:48, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
OK, thanks for trying to help. I misunderstood your edits. Try this; load the two images in different windows and switch between the windows. Your edit has a gahstly green. It's not really visible on my laptop, but very visible on my crt. I thought you were intentionally trying to give the face an off color as part of the gag. That's why I added the ...adjusted note in the caption. Duk 05:40, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
You say on my talk page you did some blending. But your edit summary on the image page from Nov. says skin tone. All i notice is the color change. Are we talking about two different edits here? Duk 15:08, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

You're really messing up the state pages...[edit]

Hi Ed g2s:

I have several state pages on my watchlist (removed personal attack).

I don't know what browser you're using, but your changes are making those pages look really strange in Internet Explorer 6. And yes, I am using a fully patched version of the current build.

If you look at the Microsoft Developer Network documentation, Microsoft's interpretation of the clear attribute is fully consistent with the official W3C documentation.

The MSDN page is:

[2]

And the W3C CSS1 standard is at:

[3]

So this is one of those few cases where Microsoft is compliant (for once) with Web standards, and it's likely that whatever browser you're using is not W3C-compliant.

I'm too busy to bother with fixing the mess you created, but you might want to revert back your changes before someone else does!

--Coolcaesar 20:00, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

"clear: right" does, in Internet Explorer as well as the browser I'm using (Firefox), make block elements "drop" down the page until there is no block element to the right of it. One of the Wikipedia skins (nostalgia or something) is broken and f***s up this behaviour, you'll see this if you stack two Image:blah.jpg|right boxes next to each other. I've just tested the pages in IE6, FF1.0, Op7 on Windows and FF1.0 on Linux using monobook.css and they look as they should. I'm guessing the skin is your problem. ed g2stalk 02:53, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I've always used the default skin---Monobook---I didn't know Wikipedia had a skinnable interface until you pointed that out and I started reading about Wikipedia user preferences. And yes, I am seeing weird behavior under Monobook.
IE is treating clear:right as clearing all body text straight down from the first table to the next. So when I look at California or Arizona, the body text is starting flush with the top of the second table (the one with the state symbols). Since the second table is usually at the bottom of the first screen or on the second screen, this looks awful.
The current North American build of IE 6, which I have, is: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158. Is that what you're using? It's important to be really careful about testing against various builds of IE 6 because Microsoft has a really, really bad habit of screwing around with IE's behavior between service packs and even between different builds (which is why corporate administrators hate to do IE upgrades unless they absolutely have to).
And yes, I'm aware that the latest build has a lot of bugs that were introduced because Microsoft added a huge amount of buffer overrun protection all over its browser code to make IE more hacker-proof. But since Microsoft is currently trying to force its entire user community (about 85-90% of the total Web user community) to upgrade to the latest build via Microsoft Automatic Update, Wikipedia needs to match the browser, rather than expect users to switch browsers to use Wikipedia. When Wikipedia hits No. 10 on Alexa's ratings, then expecting users to switch browsers may be a more reasonable position.
--Coolcaesar 05:18, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I run all my Windows Updates and have the exact same build number as you, but California renders fine for me. If this turns out to be a problem for a lot of users we can move the second table much further down the page, it doesn't have to hang off the end of the first infobox. ed g2stalk 13:13, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I've tried an independant comparison - I've been using Firefox for the past few months. California looks the same to me in both IE 6.0 and Firefox 1.0, and I believe both look fine. I'd like to see the second box on New Jersey and New York soon. :) - UtherSRG 01:05, Mar 13, 2005 (UTC)

Nice to meet you![edit]

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to read this! I wanted to take some time to introduce myself to some of the english speaking sysops in the Commons so that if I got into a jam I could call for some instruction. I'm from the old BBS days when we connected phone to phone with C64's and the like. So I understand a bit of the function of your work and it isn't necessarily all that fun all of the time. I hope that I can get to know some of your work better and share mine.

For the most part I fall into the category of an artist. Nearly all of my work is Writing and Music. I've constructed a rudamentary Wiki page in the last 24 hours attached to my signature. At least I have that battle won...

In any case, glad to make your aquaintance and I hope I can be entertaining in my baby steps into the open future.

While not exactly autofellatio vandalism, using language redirects to spam a picture shows malicious intent, just like with page move vandals. I have therefore blocked this user permanently. Mgm|(talk) 14:37, Mar 19, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Ed,
would you be so kind to reduce the size of our Scuderia logo and write also a "(C) Ferrari Press Office" near? This helps to reduce abuses, and Jimbo Wales promised it to me last summer:

Ed - I hope you don't mind that I scaled down your enormous Ferrari logo, which seemed fair to the Ferrari people. I deleted your version, but kept it on my computer, so if you've lost it and would like it back, I can e-mail it to you. Regards — Dan | Talk 21:25, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
