Orthography reform[edit]

He tried to reform the orthography of Spanish, and for several years, some of his proposals were official in some countries.

Nationality[edit]

I have to admit I'd never heard of this guy before today. I found this article while cleaning up Category:Chilean people and added a few more categories here. I didn't want to overcat it, but since this guy moved around so much, some of these cats are arguable. For example, his poetry began in Venezuela, so Category:Venezuelan poets is warranted, but he continued to write poetry and other works in England (but not Chile?). Surely, after 19 years in England he would have nationalized and again in Chile where he was senator, but his expatriation/nationalization is not explicitly mentioned. Should we just go by the nationality he had at the time he began certain types of work? The lede sentence tends to hinge all those -ists on Venezuela, yet there is no Category:Venezuelan humanists, and the closest thing I could find for academia is Category:Venezuelan schoolteachers, which might not really be appropriate. Suggestions anyone? Ruodyssey (talk) 09:58, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He was more than just a poet or academic, he was the first person ever to write the Spanish Language Grammar, which later turned into the basics for the RAE (Real Academia Española, or Royal Academy of Spanish Language). I'm Venezuelan, and if American people don't know who Andres Bello was, I can describe him to you as one of the most important figures for the progress of the Spanish language, as there may be some other relevant historical characters in English language. This should be in the article, and it should also have a category like "Spanish grammar funders" or something like that if you ask me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.184.72.137 (talk) 03:27, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
