ENIAC contract date[edit]

Can anyone confirm actual date of the contract signing?

1943 – The United States Army contracts with the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School to develop the ENIAC.

The ENIAC entry states 'The construction contract was signed on June 5, 1943' Cockerilla (talk) 00:56, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Importance[edit]

Mav, Please explain how the following are of minor historical value

  1. 1809 - Napoleon orders the annexation of the papal states to the French empire
  2. 1949 - Berlin Blockade is lifted by the Soviet Union
  3. 1949 - Canadian government recognises State of Israel
  4. 1973 - The Watergate scandal hearings are televised

Kingturtle 01:02 19 May 2003 (UTC)

  1. I couldn't confirm this at all after 10 minutes of searching.
  2. The blockade was lifted on May 12 (already listed there)
  3. Minor historical value unless Canada was the first nation to recognize Israel
  4. Minor historical value that I strongly suspect is wrong since I updated a day page in March (I think) which stated that televised hearings began. It is also vague ; literally all that it is saying is that hearings are on TV. So what? They were on TV for months.

Where was your source for all the events you added? I've found out the hard way that a good quarter to a third of the events listed on "this day in history" websites are somewhat to completely wrong or otherwise minor trivia. --mav

  1. Napolean...see [1] & [2], and it is significant
  2. You are correct. I was wrong. My source was Timeline of United States diplomatic history...which said it happened May 17. I have just changed it to read May 12.
  3. Truman was the first to recognize Israel. I can see your point
  4. The senate hearings began May 17, and they were televised from the start. [3] & [4], and this event is significant.

My source for the things I add to the date-articles is Wikipedia. I click on What Links to that day and started poking around. Sometimes, I have learned, I am misled by wrong information (see Timeline of United States diplomatic history above), but I also find some cool items like Antikythera mechanism. Kingturtle 01:53 19 May 2003 (UTC)

Fair enough - I partially stand corrected. It just takes one hell of a lot of time to confirm each and every entry so I do sometime delete false positives. I just don't want to spread false information around when I update every year page and most of the subject pages from information contained on these pages. --mav

I am glad we can have these discussions in mature manners. Kingturtle 03:09 19 May 2003 (UTC)

Saxophone's patent date must have been duplicated to May 17 and June 22. One should be fixed. --PuzzletChung

You could have just been bold and added her yourself. However, I've done. —Wrathchild (talk) 16:01, 15 February 2006 (UTC) Thanks[reply]

World Neurofibromatosis Day[edit]

Why is World Neurofibromatosis Day continually being removed from this page?

Please check with Wikipedia's own article on what constitutes an observance:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_observance

Also check external sources for its authenticity before removing it:

http://www.childrenwithtumours.org/Pages/WorldNeorufibromatosisDay.aspx http://www.yvonnefoong.com/2012/05/22/world-neurofibromatosis-awareness-day-2012/ http://beautymarknation.org/2012/02/02/world-nf-awareness-day-may-17th/

Thank-you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.79.208.19 (talk) 00:12, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This observance is not the subject of its own article and per WP:DOY it should not be included for this reason. In a show of good faith, please remove it. If you have questions, please ask here. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 00:25, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mufka is not aware that there IS mention of it's observance in Wikipedia's article on NF: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurofibromatosis. But I guess Mufka will go and delete that out as well to continue the crusade against people suffering from this horrible disease. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.119.242.169 (talk) 14:07, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We are not on any kind of crusade here, we are writing an encyclopaedia. We are not on a crusade against people suffering from horrible diseases. Nor are we on a crusade to help people suffering from horrible diseases. We simply write factual information about horrible diseases. We are not here to Right great wrongs. Detective Comics #27[edit]

Right, there’s a BIT of stuff going on.

I’m a blogger: and have managed to come up with a well received post about Batman’s first appearance, which I’d initial thought was in March, 1939. After all, it WAS mentioned in the relevant day of the year entry. (For [March.])

My of my regular readers, however, found THIS link: on DC’s own site, that stated the original release date was 17th May!

Can we get any kind of confirmation of this?

Or clean-up?

Thanks!

Check Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Comics, most users interested in comics are there, and may help you with this. Cambalachero (talk) 14:48, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup of births and deaths[edit]

In accordance with the guidelines, I'm continuing to weed the Births and Deaths sections by removing entries for celebrities with 0-4 articles in other languages. Where possible, these have been transferred to the relevant Year in Topic articles. As well as making the lists more manageable, this will help with the globalization effort.Deb (talk) 18:26, 18 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2013 Tbilisi anti-homophobia rally protests[edit]

First same-sex marriage?[edit]

The Events section says, "2004 – The first legal same-sex marriages in the U.S. are performed in the state of Massachusetts." However, the article Timeline of same-sex marriage in the United States#1970s says,

Jack Baker and Michael McConnell apply and are granted a marriage licence in Blue Earth County, Minnesota after discovering the county has no laws prohibiting same sex marriage. Therefore on 3, Sept, 1971 both men became the first legally married same sex couple in US and modern recorded history.
