We link to Sequoia here, but Sequoia is a disambiguation page between trees and national forests. Could a kind Wikipeidan add the intended Sequoia to that disambiguation page, then directly link to the new page here? DanKeshet

Because we have lists of virtually every other nationality. I think they deserve one two. What does everyone else think? Danny

Also, the Native American article is quite long, and this list should be quite long. Might as well open up the space for them both to be long then cram them into one article. DanKeshet

I thought the term Native American didn't apply to anyone outside of the US and Canada (and not even the Inuits or Hawaiians amongst them). Tuf-Kat

If Inuits count, then Ahpellah and Etookashoo, who were vital to the success (or failure) of Cook's expedition to the North Pole, should be added.

Well, we can create List of Native American of Canada and United States and List of Inuits... :p

You have to read Native American article: The Innu people of the Labrador/Quebec peninsula and the Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut peoples of the far north of the continent are not properly considered American Indians

There's a fairly long discussion at Native American and talk:Native American about how we should classify the indigenous people of the Americas. Personally, I find it somewhat inappropriate to classify them primarily using today's political boundaries. What of the people who live in tribes whose territory covers more than one present-day nation state? Especially considering that we're including people from before and after today's borders were drawn. DanKeshet

Do you mean in the article, Dan? I agree with that. I'm concerned that the title isn't accurate. If Native American doesn't refer to natives south of the US, the article's title or content should be changed. Tuf-Kat

Yes, I mean in the article. I don't think there's anything wrong with listing indigeneous people of South America in an article entitled "List of Native Americans". But I think we should try to use the classification scheme in Native American, rather than by "Canada", "Mexico", etc. The first step towards doing that is listing each person's nation (Lakota, etc.). DanKeshet

Aren't "Native Canadians" called "First Nations"? -- Zoe

This statement is my belief. Native American is not a proper term for the indigenous tribes who lived on what is now American soil anymore than Indian is a correct label resulting from Christopher Columbus' error. The term may be best suited for those who came to take the land for themselves then named it America but you can not be native to what did not exist yet replaced your own. If you wish to use proper terms then compile a respectful list of all tribes who inhabited the land prior to becoming America. Respect cares nothing for how long the list may be or time spent doing it proper justice, it only matters that it exist. Inhabitants before America are not First Nation, at best and sad worst they are a Previous Nation; First Nation are those people who created America. So what term do the ancestors of pre-America people prefer, perhaps Indigenous Tribes with a list of all that are and those who were? I truly hope to hear responses from members of pre-America indigenous people for it is what you collectively desire to be referred to that matters. Thank you for the conversation.
