I don't think Steve Havelka is actually "a homeless man who roams up and down Burnside carrying a large wooden crucifix on one shoulder". He appears to be a famous Portland computer programmer, and creator of the Pokey the Penguin comic. See http://www.stevehavelka.com/ and http://everything.blockstackers.com/index.pl?node_id=1042348 . I agree; this list should clarify current/former residents, etc. For example, I had never heard anything about Frank Black moving to PDX, so I had no idea if his inclusion on the list meant that he was born here (no), grew up there (no evidence for that), spent time here as a young adult, or just moved here last year (the last is true, according to the Los Angeles Times, July 23, 2005). -little otik 22:08, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Name formats[edit]

Yes, but first, let's establish that it *is* a list of notable Portlanders. I wonder why List of notable Portlanders isn't the title of the page instead of just a redirect to this page? Perhaps it should be switched, and List of Portlanders should be the redirect. Establishing notability[edit]

We're going to have to find sources for all of these in the <ref></ref> format preferably. Also, should red-linked names be included? --Liface 00:22, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the red-line names should stay, we can provide outside links (like the Callahan entry does), if necessary.
At least keep:
  • Larry Crane
  • Stanley Fafara (Whitey from Leave it to Beaver)
Other people are going to have to decide what happens to the rest of the names without entries. I see at least 3 or 4 on the list that are of dubious value in terms of notability.

How about some guidelines for new names added to the list?

  • Add names to the list if the person is
  1. notable
  2. has an entry in wikipedia (create one if there isn't one already)
  3. known to be associated with Portland

Format/Editing[edit]

  • Names are written in direct order: First Name Last Name,
    • For example: Albert Einstein, not Einstein, Albert.
  • Names are in alphabetical order by surname/last name.

A page similar to this one. List of people from San Francisco, is currently under review as an article for deletion, for reasons which would apply to this article as well. I am conducting an RfC on the talk page of the above-mentioned list to determine whether the concensus agrees on keeping such lists or not. Any and all comments are more than welcome. Frank Black?[edit]

I have never once heard that Frank Black lives in Portland, Oregon, and that article doesn't specify what state he lives in. Table format[edit]

Using this list as an example, I propose that we use the following table format:

Keep in mind this is just for a single entry, and the columns would be wider as longer names and notability explanations are used. (Edit: I added a few more rows to offer a better illustration.) This list could potentially reach featured status, and it would be nice to have a sortable table. Pictures on the side would also spruce the page up a bit. Any objections, suggestions, or concerns? I had so much fun working on List of Oregon state symbols that I thought this might be a fun new project to work on.
