Sukhoi KR-860

Create a new article to be titled Sukhoi KR-860. The Sukhoi KR-860, as far as I have known, is a giant twin deck airliner that is being developed in Russia in competition with the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. The acronym KR in KR-860 stands for Kriliya Rossii ("wings of Russia" in Russian), while 860 confirms the fact that the KR-860 is intended to carry approximately 860 passengers. "Sukhoi revealed on April 15 that it is designing a new ultra high-capacity airliner, the Kriliya Rossii (Wings of Russia) 860 or KR-860, to rival the A3XX The KR-860 would be the largest passenger aircraft ever built, with a range of over 16,093km (8,674nm) and capacity for 860-1,000 passengers or about 200 tons of cargo. Sukhoi admitted however that the major problem would be development funding and it is currently trying to attract Russian investors although it is also using profits from its military aircraft sales to fund the project. The manufacturer registered a commercial aviation consortium, Grazdanskiye Samolety (or civil aircraft), in Kazan during March to co-ordinate a range of civil aviation projects, including the KR-860. Five Moscow-based aviation firms and research institutes have joined the consortium, together with five Tatarstan engine and aircraft manufacturers. The Russian Moseksimbank is also involved in the consortium and Inkombank plans to join it shortly according to Sukhoi's deputy chief designer for civil aircraft, Gennady Yanpolsky. Sukhoi had previously been offered a 20% workshare in the Airbus A3XX project but has declined this, saying it is too small and would want at least a 50% share if it was to become involved. Although well-known for its fighter designs, Sukhoi has already become renowned for its high-performance competition aerobatics aircraft and is working on several other civil aviation projects, the most advanced of which is the S-80 26-seat, twin-turboprop, multi-purpose STOL transport, the first two prototypes of which are planned for completion later this year."

No word on the current status of the KR-860 project is available, but I guess the KR-860 is scheduled to make its first flight in 2009, with an entry into service in 2010.
