Requested move 15 June 2023[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: not moved. Consensus that the current article title is the WP:COMMONNAME. (closed by non-admin page mover) ModernDayTrilobite (talkcontribs) 14:36, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hall & OatesDaryl Hall & John Oates – The encyclopedia entry for a band name should follow the actual title of the band name for clarity's sake. Readers researching the band Darryl Hall and John Oates will find the official band name used in Allmusic.com, Discogs.com, Spotify.com, and many other places online where they consume the music or information about the band. Wikipedia's article title "Hall & Oates" creates unnecessary confusion around the name of the musical act, just as an article about The Rolling Stones titled "The Stones" would create unnecessary confusion. 135.180.126.4 (talk) 23:28, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What name do you propose?—blindlynx 00:16, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I propose "Daryl Hall & John Oates", which, as I noted above, is the name used by both the band and prominent online sources like Allmusic.com, Spotify.com, and Discogs.com. It's not simply a matter of honoring the band's wishes...it's not 1985 anymore. People seeking out information about them are likely learning about them online. They didn't grow up hearing disc jockeys using the group's nickname. They might not have grown up in a country where anyone under 50 has ever heard of the group, or even many people over 50. For all the old fans who are used to "Hall & Oates", a simple redirect will get them to the right place with no friction. 135.180.126.4 (talk) 03:58, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose move. The common name remains Hall & Oates. O.N.R. (talk) 07:53, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: Not the WP:COMMONNAME, see Google Trends, Ngram Viewer. This is a perennial proposal with several previous discussions against it. There's even an FAQ entry about it!MaterialWorks ping me! 18:21, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per common name, the ngrams provided above, and so as to not offset the name Garfunkel and Oates (who have probably surpassed the originals in recent and current-culture name recognition). Wikipedia should have a list of "no more RM's" for perennials and other topics which are listed two, three, or more times in drawn out deletion lotteries ("maybe this time not enough editors will show up..."). Comment/response: Lol, as much as I love Garfunkel and Oates (and as iconic as Kate Micucci is as a voice actor), Garfunkel and Oates probably haven't surpassed the originals in name recognition, lol. Paintspot Infez (talk) 21:35, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe not, but someday...would be nice if Art Garfunkel and John Oates made a video with them (have they? if so, make another!). Randy Kryn (talk) 13:38, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose per above. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 01:45, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, obvious WP:COMMONNAME. Even their official website uses the common name of Hall & Oates (hallandoates.com). Andygray110 (talk) 16:08, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Once again Name move[edit]

Pointless argumentation. Personal feelings don't overcome a clear consensus. 23:32, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

I find it somewhat "silly" that the name of this article has not been changed to Daryl Hall and John Oates. The two primaries of the band both say the official name is Daryl Hall and John Oates. They have also pointed out that the name on all their albums is Daryl Hall and John Oates. Despite the URL of their official being hallandoates the very first page of the site is Daryl Hall John Oates. Their official merchandise is overwhelmingly inscribed with the name Daryl Hall and John Oates.

It just does not make sense that wikipedia refuses to use the official name over a nickname.

I know a title move was recently requested and it was denied. But, I feel the denial was incorrect. Another request should be made. Rick Henry Christopher (talk) 22:47, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lawsuit[edit]

Was going to edit the Lawsuit title text when somebody sniped me and it looks good. It is HALL'S lawsuit against OATES. Thanks to whoever fixed it just before I refreshed the page. CentralPAGuy (talk) 05:24, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lawsuit & Restraining Order = Breakup?[edit]

A couple anonymous users have already edited the page to imply that the duo have dissolved in light of the legal dispute between them and the restraining order against Oates. I reverted the first change since there was no official announcement of a dissolution (and it's not like one of them died), but after it was reinstated by the second anonymous edit, I thought it'd be worth bringing up here. Game4brains (talk) 05:33, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

John Oates has said that he has "moved on" from being part of the duo, while Daryl Hall has stated that they are undergoing a "global divorce" of their creative partnership. So it looks as if Hall & Oates is effectively over... but there hasn't been a definitive announcement of a split as yet. Mark and inwardly digest (talk) 17:28, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
