Does the river have to start and end within the state boundary to count, or does it include rivers that merely pass through the state? That should be made clear in the article. - DavidWBrooks 02:14, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Well, looking at the article a little more closely, I see it includes multi-state rivers like the Mississippi, so the question is answered! I will make it clear in the introduction. - DavidWBrooks 02:15, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Entirely within[edit]

The lists include a note about the longest river "entirely within" each state. An IP editor recently changed the entry for New York for the Mohawk river to the Hudson river. At issue, it appears, is whether "entirely within" a state means "having both banks in the given state throughout its entire length" (which would be the Mohawk) or "never having both banks outside the given state" (which would be the Hudson). I have no opinion on this issue, other than thinking that the same definition should be used for every state and that it would be best if the difference between these two were clarified.
