The model of the solar system Capella describes in De Nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii et de septem Artibus liberalibus libri novem is not heliocentric. It is a geocentric model in which the epicycles of Mercury and Venus are centred on the sun, rather than points lying between the sun and the earth, as in the ptolemaic model. I can affirm this from having actually read Stahl, Johnson and Burge's English translation of the work. Any source which says otherwise is mistaken, so please do not miscorrect "geocentric model" back to the erroneous "heliocentric model". David Wilson 07:01, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is a forerunner of the Tychonic system, where the earth is in the centre and all the planets are circling round the sun. It's a geo-heliocentric system. Eriugena is somewhere in-between. In his system Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter are circling round the sun. Macrobius is calling it the the "Egyptian system". The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Martianus Capella/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.
It would be nice to have and article which was somewhat more sympathetic to its subject. One left with the impression that the writer has not necessarily even read Capella's work. The writing is clear and informative enough I suppose, but does not rise above what appears to be a mere synthesis of a few articles about Capella, rather than a careful and learned appraisal of his actual work.
