The territory that was annexed by Russia by the Beijing Treaty was added to an already existing Primorskaya Oblast. I am not aware if it was ever officially designated as Ussuri Krai. Ussuri Krai, at least as far as I know, refers to the territory of modern Primorye, but only in a descriptory, maybe even in someone poetic sense (much like "Заполярный край" or "родной край" would).

Also, the Russian name in parenthesis says "Амурский край" instead of "Уссурийский край".

I am also not sure about Amur Krai. I could not find a reference it was called that; as far as I know it always was an oblast, not a krai.

I would have made changes myself, but I am not sure what kind of structure you [Mikkalai] had in mind when creating articles about historical krais, and I wouldn't want to break it, so I'm leaving this up to you to have it fixed.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus europeaus) 16:18, Jan 21, 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I also became supicious, when I found much more references to Krais, see Talk:Krais of Imperial Russia, so I didn't add more "krais". Now I am sure only in four "official" krais: Western, N-W, S-W, Turkistan. I have no idea bout the rest.

Nevertheless, the term was in regular use. Perhaps we can distinguish official Krais by writing them from capital letter, and write inofficial ones from small, e.g., "Ussuri krai" vs. Turkistan Krai? Mikkalai 18:08, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

It's an option, but I'm not sure it would do much good. Ussuri [K/k]rai, for example, is essentially the same as modern Primorsky Krai, so anything we may have to say about Ussuri krai would apply to Primorsky Krai as well. To me, it would make more sense to move the description of Ussuri krai to the article on Primorsky Krai. The same is true of other "unofficial" krais—they can easily be merged with something else.

I've been working on History of the administrative division of Russia a while ago, but I didn't get as far as the 19th century yet. I will need to finally put all my notes, snippets, and other reference materials together and start working on that series again. When I get to krais, I'll make an extra effort to re-check which ones were truly official administrative units, and which ones were just called "krais" in other contexts. It will take a while, though, so if you have a different plan regarding the articles on historical krais, go ahead and implement it.

Your plans are OK with me. I am not doing a systematic work in this area. I just stumbled upon some info about krais. Some of which may be incorrect. Mikkalai 19:15, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)
