hello, I am a student from the british schools in Uruguay, I am sitting for the IB exam of chemistry in may. I ahve to perform an experiment related to alcohol. My idea was to get different alcoholic beverages and calculate its percentage. I thought that I could do this by a fractional distillation, so there I cpuld identity the quantity of alcohol in that beverage. but is there a better way of calcultating the %??? pleasde I thank you if you answer me thank you !!!!!!! Please accept my apologies. It does appear that there was considerable confusion about the origin of the material. Please do let me know your opinion of my extensive - and IMO superior, rewrite. However, with respect for citations - with which were absent - please do cite them. I'm sure that musicologists and others would be interested. Just so you'll know, I have been a long-time resident of that area, and have done some study of Handy. His music figures importantly in my musical development. As for the quality of the article - without regard for that now-resolved issue previously in question - I thought it was atrocious and most definitely did not even adequately render the subject. Again, perhaps a new category describing how his music was different from the standard of the time, and of today, would be an excellent in-depth. Further, to say he was a trained musician demeans his tremendous and extraordinary contributions. A monkey or dog can be trained, but only a human being can be educated - and Handy was EDUCATED. That is one very important thing that set him apart from others. Also, I most definitely DISAGREE with the rap references on "Long Gone". I do have that recording, it is nothing like rap in any sense, save for a few spoken words. If, however, spoken word categorizes and suffices for rap, I submit Johnny Cash's "Ride This Train" was the FIRST rap... and not Debbie Harry's or anyone elses. Regards, K. L. Dear Orto: Hey whats up? Hey I was just wondering if you could put world boxing champion next to the names of those boxers who have been world champions when yo are ID'ing people on the biographical listings. It's just that, well, I mean, boxers who have been world champions are in a way, lto boxing, like world leaders are to politicians. Not every boxer gets to be a world champion, and I have had to write about some boxers who were non champs too. (Some non champs have had quite a significant contribution to society, such as Chuck Wepner.

Anyways, I just think that for example, no one would write Politic next to Bill Clinton on the biographical listing, and it would be nice to see some protocol in noting which of the boxers on the list have been world champions too.

Aha, a Radius. Does it have associated driver software? (It's been years since I've dealt with a Radius.) If so, it might be worth it to reinstall that. I agree with your brother that flat screens aren't quite so good with color, but doubt that's the specific problem here; most of my experience with Radius displays (dated, as I mentioned) has been that they're very good quality, but temperamental. What problem do you have with the statement that the concept scalar is used in mathematics and consequently also in physics? Before I added that, the article said the word is used in both mathematics and physics, thereby making it look as if this might be a case in which the same word is used for two different unrelated concepts. But they are not unrelated; the use in physics is more concrete, but it is not a completely different concept; it follows naturally from the concept of scalar in mathematics. 1. Is your book published, and can one obtain it in the US?
2. It would seem you would sympathize with Steven Pinker's discussion of "language mavens". Is this perhaps accurate?
3. How often do people actually "mix up singular subjects with plural verbs?" This seems like the kind of mistake that people just won't tend to make, at least as native speakers of something more or less akin to Standard English.
4. Do you have a coherent argument for why we ought to take opposite stands on prescription for written and spoken language? Why not have one standard for all of language?

If you have a real hard copy (a book I think they were called) of the 1911 Britannica could you check Leucite. Our version of the article has great lines like: "the leucite is partly I re5h, partly altered to analcite". Not that even the correctly scanned parts are easy to read. I need your help

I have been working on expanding the entry for Pirate Radio by adding a lot of sub pages for additional info so that the original remains the master index, so to speak. However, I went to discussion and then I went from discussion back to the article and up popped one of the intermediate versions which had been created while I was working on completing the full changeover (that sounds as clear as mud - I hope you can follow what I mean.)

Anyway, I had to click back to find the latest version because without that all of the new pages are mere orphans. So, whatever it is that needs to be done to marry the latest discussion page with the latest article page is what I am requesting help with, because I don't know how the problem came about or how to fix it. (The latest article pages essentially has a list of links with contents to other geographical areas, but there is no text for those geographical areas on the main page - that is now on the new sub-pages.) Where the problem arises is when you type in Pirate Radio in search you get taken to a redirect page named "Pirate radio" which is correct. But if you type Pirate radio in search you end up with one of my old transition pages that was half-way through the expansion and incorrect. I don't know how this works because it means that there are two different pages called Pirate radio = but only the redirect from Pirate Radio is correct. "Pirate radio" accessed via search is incorrect and it is the transition page. It is very confusing, Can you help get rid of the transition page so that search and redirect end up at the same place? Rock Around the Clock vs. RATC

Hi! Thanks for the edit on the Rock Around the Clock article. Just FYI the abbreviation "RATC" is relatively new and is starting to be used to abbreviate the song in articles and discussion. I use it on my Rockabilly Hall of Fame Web site (that's my page that's linked at the bottom of the article), and Peter Ford uses it in his article on the song which was published in Goldmine and Now Dig This. About Black Folks and Wikipedia and Blackface

Hey, Ortolan *waving*. Sorry to be so late responding, but I'm a techno-idiot and just figured out how to do this. I like, pretty much, the most recent changes to African American. (I'm even warming to the divisions.) I took a look at your piece on blackface and made some changes. However, I removed the stuff about white artists covering black artists, because it's simply not blackface. Yeah, it's white folks stealing black music and/or mimicking performance styles, but it's not the same -- and, I think, somewhat diminishes the value of the black innovators being ripped off. Instead, I stuck in a quote which, perhaps, says more succinctly what you may have had in mind. I think you did a respectable job with the subject, and I'm glad you tackled it.

As far as getting more black folks to contribute to Wikipedia, I don't know anyone. Most of my friends and associates are activisits who, frankly, have better, more real-world things to do -- battles to fight, wrongs to right -- that kinda stuff. I did once make mention of Wikipedia on BlackPlanet a long while back, but that place has turned into such a cesspool, I think another mention would simply attract vandalism. What can ya do? I've gone back and even more substantially reworked, rewritten and expanded blackface to include its racist iconography and impact on American culture. I had to -- particularly after noting the igorance/naivete of some of the comments in the discussion thread. Besides, IMO, it's too important in the shaping of the American psyche (how I wanted to use that word, but I figured some ignorant asshole would flag it as violating NPOV) shouldn't be treated as merely as an entertainment phenomenon. Article Licensing

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template (or {{MultiLicensePD}} for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1

rambot and articles

I've added your name to the opt out list to ask later when the status changes. In essence I stumbled upon the WikiTravel site purely by accident and I thought it was another cool project, yet it used the CC-by-sa v.1.0 license. Now since travel mainly has to do with going to places, in many respects it directly ties into articles that the rambot created. (BTW, the rambot FAQ and User:rambot both do and should always attribute the name to you!) Now I've had some discussions on WikiTravel about changing their license to version 2.0 (which like the GFDL allows for "or later versions). Version 1.0 is a draft version and shouldn't have been used, but alas it was. So they have a similar problem, but they are much smaller. Now since I wanted to contribute to WikiTravel, I wanted to use the U.S. city articles. I mean every travel guide is going to have a line or two about some demographic statistics like the total population and the like, and some of that could be in theory copied from Wikipedia. The problem is that many people, especially people like you, have made many edits to those articles and thus the licensing does not match. So I started the project to multi-license all of the "rambot" articles so that I could use them with WikiTravel. That has entailed asking pretty much everyone for specific permission just for those articles. Now after the debacle at Talk:Oregon City, Oregon I learned some of the serious downsides of the GFDL. And I truely hope that a newer version of the GFDL fixes our problems, but I'm not being too hopeful at this point, especially since apparently they WANT it to be non-free (free being in the GPL sense). Still, you never know what might happen. When I started the project I realized that only around 4% of people don't want to multi-license at all, and almost 90% would rather just multi-license everything. Probably a third of those even went all the way and released into the public domain, which I don't recommend, but if they want to it is their right to do so. So I started asking people if they would multi-license ALL of their edits, because that seems to be what the majority of people want. Now I don't know if Wikipedia could ever move to a different license, but from my experience it has had a rather large support, and the progress in a few weeks by one person asking people has been substantial. It is still too early to worry about a Wikipedia fork or even a license change, but those types of discussions might come up if I can reach over 90% multi-licensing, which is extremely hard I would imagine. So I guess this long comment is to try and separate the two issues: 1) My desire to use all of the rambot articles on WikiTravel (which more people are comfortable with because of the smaller scale) and 2) Trying to multi-license all of wikipedia or at least improve the licensing if at all possible. Only #1 is reasonable at this point, but I'll try for both anyway. -- Ram-Man 15:30, Dec 2, 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I see you reverted my revert. Why do you think "Contemporary Evangelist Billy Sunday regularly denounced "long-haired men and short-haired women" belongs in a list of hairstyles? ok, I see. My humor setting must be on low today (probably is - there's a lot going on in real life). I can see why it can fit it the article and maybe with a lead in sentence (such as your explanation on my talk page) it will be easier to see why it fits where you put it. West Newton

Thanks for correcting someone else's thing about the train station. I wrote the subsection about buildings destroyed for the turnpike and I was sure I had it right. I grew up in West Newton, but haven't been back since 1985. I was sure the train station wasn't there in 1985, but I hesitated to correct the other guy. I wrote the article on Peirce School, since I was in the fifth grade there when it closed and I was in the first 6th grade at the new one on Temple Street. Perhaps, you can solve a mystery for me. According to the Newton City assessment roll online, the old school at Chestnut & Austin is still owned by the city but is empty. Yet their aerial view of it shows a bunch of cars in the parking lot on the south side. The last time I was there I got the impression it was being used for apartments. Hey Tom,

I remember when SV and I both put a lot of work to turn NOR into a serious policy. That was when she was fighting the Larouchites and I was fighting CheeseDreams. NOR seemed to be a crucial corellary to NPOV and "verifiability" that was essential to the integrity of the project. Now I see articles I largely wrote - based on real research, following the standards of the time, with a bibliography (just like real encyclopedia articles) but without the in-line citations typical of academic journals but not encyclopedias, and what I wrote has been deleted because it isn't cited. This is not what we meant! I really think the problem is that the rapid expansion of Wikipedia means LOTS of editors with not enough experience, and not enough good judgment, and no real community any more to make collective decisions ... the result is an overly literal reliance on policies, often in needlessly dumb ways. If you ever want to try to fix NOR or other policies, let me know.

I am more active than you but not by much. Helga and Lir, those were the days. The problem is, now no one believes in trolls. The number of policies have exploded, and now bad simply = "violated a policy." I believe in a lot of those policies, but the policies used to be props to support good judgment, now they are substitutes for good judgment, and people do not realize that the definition of a troll is someone who wreaks havoc while following the rules, literally. And I have seen too many editors I really really admire leave. It frustrates me deeply.

Mostly I just keep an eye on a few articles I put a lot of work into, and really care about. i like to see them edited because most of the time - honest! - the edits are improvements. But periodically someone has to come along and just add something downright dumb. This is what keeps me around.

Well, if you ever want to try to put up a fight to restore some lost sanity, count me in, but otherwise I hope you can stick around and just maintain your own little niche and know you are maintaining some bits of quality people will go to.

LZ 129 Hindenburg

Hi, can you comment on the origins and your work in the creation/development of the article LZ 129 Hindenburg which was created in 2002. From an initial reading of the first drafts, it appears that the article editors were identifying with a German airship as the article at that point used metric measurements/weights and noted that the name was a "foreign word." There is a date convention however, that was in place which is the M/D/Y that is more common to the United States as the "popular" style of dates and that is the sticking point now as the article has evolved. Recently a discussion has occurred around the use of date structure in the Zeppelin articles: LZ 129 Hindenburg and LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin as the dates in the article are related to an editor making the assertion that the US-style should predominate, and has made the argument based on the article being created that way and that no case had been made for the topic to be more related to Germany. MSU Interview

Dear Ortolan88,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Ortolan88. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
• A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Ortolan88.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Guideline and policy news

• Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
• Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
• The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

• JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
