Incorrect title (Pope)[edit]

Browsing Wikipedia, many of the pages of the Bishops of Rome are titled Pope <Name>. The title "Pope" is a much later development. It was unknown as a title for the Bishop of Rome until the 5th century. Therefore Anaclectus was not a Pope, neither was Peter a Pope or Linus or Clement of Rome. The page title is incorrect and should be corrected. The proper title would be "Bishop Anaclectus" and the article should say Bishop of Rome and not Pope anywhere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruben Noemen (talk • contribs) 16:59, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Untitled[edit]

The history of this page is a bit of a mess, because it is actually the history of two pages - the page that was here was deleted, replaced by that from Pope Anacletus I, then the history undeleted. Andre Engels 13:44, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Re: location of Saint Linus Church[edit]

Does anyone know exactly where at the Vatican the "Saint Linus Church" referred to in this article is supposed to be located? I've looked at several maps of Vatican City and can't find it.

Who uploaded the image on the article and claimed that it was Anacletus? That portrait shows him wearing the papal tiara, which did not existed at the time of his papacy!!!!!!<<Coburn_Pharr>> 22:57, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

While I doubt you'll return to this page 15 years later to read my comment, it wasn't uncommon for painters in earlier centuries to draw ancient figures in anachronistically "modern" garb. If there's a portrait of Anacletus wearing the papal tiara, the most likely reason is because the artist or those who commissioned him wanted to emphasize to their contemporaries that Anacletus was a pope. In reality no one knows what Anacletus looked like, so the only question is whether Wikipedia should have a portrait that guesses what Anacletus' facial hair and clothing might conceivably have been, or a portrait designed to say "this guy was a pope, behold his papal glory" regardless of whether it's accurate to the 1st century AD. There's no famous or "official" portrait of Anacletus to my knowledge, so it boils down to preference. --Ismail (talk) 15:41, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

One of the few surviving records concerning Anacletus' papacy mention him having ordained an uncertain number of priests.
