Why Are Almost All These Terms On The Previous Page Capitalized? Is That What People In Medical Professions Do--Capitalize Everything? --KQ

They are capitalized because they are Proper Nouns, as well as being capitalized in the DSM-IV.
TextPad is great for this sort of letter-crunching. But now some of the links are broken. I'm moving pages with Capitalized Names. Here's the old list to compare:

Move the list[edit]

This page should probably be moved to List of mental illnesses. --Diberri | Talk 22:39, May 20, 2004 (UTC)

Done. --Pythagorus One 19:27, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List[edit]

I am sure some of these illnesses in the list are not in fact a type of mental illness. What do you think of this claim of mine? If you agree, which ones should be deleated from the list?

--Admiral Roo 14:00, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, they're all pulled straight from the DSM-IV, which would make the "mental illness" as far as any professional is concerned. siafu 15:04, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I removed the disputed tag. If there are any that you believe shouldn't be on the list, feel free to say so and why. siafu 21:45, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Fetishism, for instance. Why is it a mental illness? It's been listed by almost all doctors as a paraphilia.--Orthologist 20:34, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Homosexual[edit]

Should homosexuality really be labled as a mental illness. Personally, I believe this is true. Although, this is Wikipedia and we need a debate about this.

I believe it shouldn't be. I will take it down. If anyone has any objections, edit it back. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.115.90.55 (talk) 00:53, 11 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

The article includes the title "as defined by the DSM and ICD". It's fair to use those as guides. As I understand it, netiher of those documents (in modern days) considers homosexuality to be a mental illness. Ergo, it should go. --Joe Decker (talk) 05:20, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What about pedophilia which is closely related to homosexuality? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.15.1.222 (talk) 19:23, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pedophilic disorder is in the DSM-5, as a type of paraphilic disorder. It is not related to homosexuality. the DSM-5 reference can be found here --Gronk Oz (talk) 12:20, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Homosexuality shouldn't be on the list; it was taken off in 1975, I believe. As for pedophilic disorder, if it's in the DSM-5 then it should be there, and no, it has no links to homosexuality.

Kindest regards,

Chesnaught555 (talk) 10:47, 23 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Phobias[edit]

I was wondering, isn't phobia a mental illness. There is a long list of manias and then mania by itself. Why isn't it the same for different phobias. User:Ishvara7 6/27/07 17:13 PM

You're right. I've added it to the list. Tim Q. Wells 23:26, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You guys are stupid! homosexual?? yeah ok! you would have to be STUPID to believe that homosexual as a mental illness! PEOPLE NEED TO USE THESE SITES YOU KNOW! so why be stupid and put your little brains to help some people! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.95.6.132 (talk) 19:13, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HOW IS HOMOSEXUALITY A ILLNESS 172.88.242.214 (talk) 03:34, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Mental disorder" versus "mental illness"[edit]

Question: starting with its very title, DSM-IV names almost everything in it as a "disorder," and there are few, if any references to "mental illness." ICD-9 also refers to "mental disorders," broken down into psychotic and non-psychotic types. Why are we using the terminology of "illness" rather than "disorder," when that is what the diagnostic manuals themselves use? Poindexter Propellerhead 23:57, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

True, and I agree this should be termed mental disorder, like the article on it. Should make the change. EverSince (talk) 22:12, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It should definitely be mental disorder not mental illness. Rreagan007 (talk) 19:56, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Megalomania[edit]

Megalomania, or delusions of grandeur, should be listed in my opinion, but I don't know if it would be considered a mental illness. 68.188.56.183 (talk) 17:09, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DSM[edit]

The illnesses as classified by the DSM should be removed or moved to separate list as this does not present a globalised view of the topic. The ICD, part of the WHO, is an international list and should be used solely for this page. The title should then also be changed. McLerristarr (Mclay1) (talk) 23:37, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Should this page be edited to include disorders based on their ICD-10 name then? Should we have one list for DSM diagnoses and one list for ICD diagnoses? Dirajero (talk) 00:50, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

This title is a bit, er, odd. Is there any reason we don't have it at List of mental disorders as defined by the DSM and ICD? Or List of DSM and ICD mental disorders? --JaGatalk 08:13, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was moved to the new name by Koavf (talk · contribs) less than a month ago, without any apparent discussion. List of mental disorders as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health ProblemsList of mental disorders – Revert undiscussed (and ridiculous) change. WP:NAMINGCRITERIA asks us to keep titles concise, and this misses by a long shot. JaGatalk 18:21, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per WP:PRECISION. If a kindly admin sees this, I would suggest this be done speedily as the current title is clearly ridiculous. Jenks24 (talk) 06:31, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Subtypes? NOS?[edit]

I was editing the list today and I noticed that some of the listed disorders are not actually full disorders, but subtypes (example: ADD, catatonic schizophrenia). There are also some NOS diagnoses (EDNOS). Is this list intended to include all the subtype/NOS diagnoses in the DSM? I'm willing to go through and add things, I just wanted some consensus first.

Also, there's some things on the list such as BED, which is I don't believe has an ICD or DSM diagnosis apart from EDNOS. There's also perfectionism, which I haven't been able to find any sources for stating that it's a disorder (only that it's a trait that can lead to disorders). And bibliomania? OCD/anxiety symptom or disorder? Dirajero (talk) 22:47, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Someone should add descriptions to all of the categories[edit]

I made sweeping changes to the article including sorting the disorders into categories someone should add one or two sentences to each explaining what each category means. I don't feel qualified to do that myself as I have no formal education in phycology and I'd rather someone with more knowledge do it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LJFIN2 (talkcontribs) 14:01, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Forgotten disorders[edit]

Either I am blind, or misophonia and probably a bunch of other disorders aren't added here. Unfortunately, am I suffering badly from misophonia and my family just complains because I can't stand normal sounds. I have told them I might have misophonia, they even suggested it themselves, but I have zero support. I honestly think they don't know what misophonia really is.

Anyway, please add misophonia and other disorders that you might have missed! (sorry if it's just me that's blind) 78.79.235.7 (talk) 17:30, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

misophonia isn't on there because it's not recognized by the APA are the WHO. In my opinion it and some other things not on there should be but it can't be that anyone can add anything they think is a disorder to this list. Even though they are flawed and biased the DSM-V and ICD-11 are the best authority on what is and isn't a mental disorderLJFIN2 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 01:52, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Remove gender dysphoria[edit]

This is not considered a mental disorder under the DSM and its arguably unkind to insinuate so. Therefore I think it should be removed from ‘Other’. 97shadow413 (talk) 19:59, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Note: The full name of the DSM is "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" 76.134.8.122 (talk) 19:09, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. Gender Dysphoria should not be labelled as such if the DSM no longer acknowledges it. 2600:1004:B304:29E:89B4:BC57:2AB5:450 (talk) 18:24, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The DSM isn't the only diagnostic manual, the ICD has gender dysphoria so it should be included. The Blue Rider 18:41, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedic Language[edit]

Howdy! The end of the lead section currently reads, "There are over 200 types of Mental Health disorders. It is affecting how many people work, act and function. Some of the more common disorders are anxiety, depression, eating disorders, ADHD. Within those disorders there are more in specific disorders. Like separation anxiety."

This paragraph isn't very clear, and includes an orphaned clause (among other minor grammatical mistakes). I'm going to fix it up a bit, just to improve readability and bring it back in line with the MOS. I think the rest of the article probably needs a good go-over for stylistic tweaks, too, honestly. I'll see about putting up a listing with the guild of copyeditors. Atomic putty? Rien! 18:33, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
