John C. Lilly[edit]
This is something I found out that I thought I'd share, since ECCO had been my favorite game since my childhood.

John C Lilly was a scientist who did a lot of research with drugs and dolphins. In someone these experiments, he would take Ketamine and attempt to communicate with the dolphins, which, he insisted he could. He also spoke about contact with a cosmic organization called "ECCO" which stands for "Earth Communication Control Office". You can read any of his works to find out more about that, but he basically stated that there was a cosmic organization of overseers facilitating human evolution.
I notice a lot of interesting parallels between these two subjects that no one else seems to bring up.
"Lilly's work with dolphins may have inspired the Ecco the Dolphin games for the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis. Lilly coined the acronym Earth Co-incidence Control Office (ECCO), which refers to his belief that non-physical entities arrange for the occurrence of meaningful co-oincidences (synchronicities) in order to co-ordinate the physical and spiritual development of individuals on planet Earth."
The Vortex seem to parallel Solid State Intelligence.
- The connection between Ecco the dolphin and John C. Lilly is tenous at best.
- The Vortex aliens are clearly inspired by the movie Alien / H.R. Giger. Quote Annunziata: "I always loved time travel and Aliens, especially evil, hungry ones are convenient bad guys."
- It's tempting to think there's a link between Ecco and E.C.C.O., but it's just a coincidence (hehe). The origin of Ecco's name is well documented in the book "Playing at the Next Level: A History of American Sega Games" by Ken Horowitz, and on Annunziata's twitter feed. When asked directly about it, Annunziata confirmed that Ecco isn't named after E.C.C.O.
- In all known interviews, Annunziata never once cites Lilly's work as an inspiration, whereas "Sounding" by Searls is brought up all the time. The only direct reference I know of is his tweet "Obscure Ecco Trivia #16: No, I never took LSD, but did read a lot from John Lilly." - That doesn't deny the game took inspiration from it, but it also doesn't confirm it.
- A recent Making of Ecco the Dolphin video, which doesn't mention John C. Lilly at all, was retweeted by Annunziata with the comment "Ok, this is easily the best and most accurate Ecco biopic ever! And, the film makers never accuse me of taking hallucinogens, for which I am grateful."
- Finally, let's not forget that the game was co-designed by Novotrade's László Szenttornyai. There's no indication whatsoever that he was familiar with Lilly's work.
