Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. You might like to start by reading the tutorial and introducing yourself at the new users page. For ideas of what to put on your user page, see Wikipedia:User page.

If you have any questions, you can ask at the help desk or on my talk page. Two useful tips are that you can sign your name using four tildes (~~~~) and you can preview your changes before you save using the show preview button. You can regularly find new tips on the Community Portal. I look forward to reading your great articles and I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. :) Angela. 01:40, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Do you have any better proposal to inform about the pronounciation? /212.181.86.76 07:37, 30 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hi my name is Judith Fulmer of Greenville SC.,

I think that the Presidents and Congress are acting as though they are celebrities who get paid way too much for influencing our children and our Country to destruction of human character and immoral behavior.

I am so sick and tired of going into a hotel/motel or gas station and feel like I just got price gauged in Little India Knowing that the American people would just like to have their own home.

I think we, the American people should do away with Congress altogether and be given options of solution to our problems so we can vote at the polls, Not option to vote on people who say they are going to fix it and just put band aides on problems. All you hear about is the problem no solution.

I think wall street should pay back at a 24% interest rate and if they miss a payment they are charged double plus the interest.

Sincerely lets vote on this,

Judith L Fulmer

Power over Ethernet[edit]

Hey - I saw Power over ethernet when it first came in and was mulling it over. Look at IEEE 802.3 - maybe it could be rolled into that somehow, but I'm not up enough on the IEEE standards to handle it. Ocon 22:18, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Done; moved into IEEE 802.3. Peter O. (Talk) 22:39, Jul 5, 2004 (UTC)
Format of IEEE 802.3 looks much better now, and Power over ethernet is more balanced. Very nice. I'm going to go ahead and remove it from Cleanup. Ocon 23:39, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

VfD Nominations[edit]

Hi, I just had to move three nominations that you made on votes for deletion: they were listed at the top of the page under June 30th rather than at the bottom of the page under July 5th. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 00:11, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I do not mind that you would like to delete the entry that I added Liu Di. I can not, however, find it on the Wikipedia:Votes for deletion page. -- Pangguan 25, July 2004

I had to move another of your VfD nominations from the top to the bottom Salasks 22:24, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)

Taiwanese language[edit]

Please do not move pages without discussing and gaining consensus to do so. --Jiang 01:12, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Sorry. I didn't realize why the page was called "Taiwanese (linguistics)" instead of the more correct (in my view) "Taiwanese language". Peter O. (Talk) 01:14, Jul 8, 2004 (UTC)

There was discussion at Talk:Hakka (linguistics). --Jiang 01:18, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

From a brief glance, one can see the confusion in classification among the Sino-Tibetan group. Whether Taiwanese is a language or a dialect is in dispute. Peter O. (Talk) 01:23, Jul 8, 2004 (UTC)

(William M. Connolley 19:30, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)) Please leave this alone. I don't want it to be a redirect, thank you very much.

External links[edit]

Hi! I have considered using a bot for this. However, it still has to be done partly by hand, because some articles have all their headings incorrectly capitalised (so they should all be fixed to prevent inconsistency), or they need to be refactored slightly if the heading level is wrong; I'm quite used to doing them in batches now, which seems to be reasonably quick :-) I expect to be finished in a week or two in any case, which is probably shorter than it'd take to create/approve a bot. Lady Lysiŋe Ikiŋsile | Talk 04:48, 2004 Jul 9 (UTC)

American spelling[edit]

Hi, please try to avoid changing British English spelling to American English unless you are changing it to make the article consistent, and the original author wrote in American English. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Usage and spelling for further details. Thanks. Angela. 17:14, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Melbourne railway stations[edit]

It would have been nice if you had done any research at all before listing all the Melbourne railway station articles on Cleanup, with the implication that they should go to VFD.

At present, we have Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne, and one of our main goals is to get decent articles for the railway stations of the city. We've only recently started on these, and as can be seen from the stations linked from Alamein railway line, Melbourne, I think we can get quite decent articles on these. And they're only first drafts, anyway.

Oh, and for the record, we do have a "railway map" - List of Melbourne railway stations. But please, in future, if you're going to pull a stunt like this, a little consultation with the local editors wouldn't go astray. Ambivalenthysteria 09:36, 12 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I'd say the article is useful, but more as a utility. See List of Earldoms, List of Baronies for examples of similar pages. Mackensen 03:26, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi. You took Velvet Mayhem off Cleanup, removed the cleanup header, replaced it with the vfd header, but didn't list it on the VfD page. Were you planning on doing that? Also, that Google link is inappropriate for the article page. It should go on the VfD page to support your argument. RickK 05:17, Jul 20, 2004 (UTC)

hi, i already did the wikipedia:cleanup on this article (it was listed on the 26th of june), and should be removed from the cleanup list. i am removing the cleanup and vfd notice (it's not currently listed on vfd). clarkk 08:38, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Quick delete candidates[edit]

Good work on marking the quick delete candidates. However, please don't delete the existing text when adding the delete note; it makes it easier to check the original content that way. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 02:14, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

gracias[edit]

thanks for your help on redirects. Kzzl

Ice cream van[edit]

Ice cream van definitely more common in the UK and Ireland (and it looks like a UK originated article). Just add the redirect from Ice cream truck - a term I'd never heard until today. Isn't wiki educational. Gerry Lynch 14:37, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Spelling (and other matters).[edit]

I appreciate your copyediting of the SAMPA transcriptions in the Russian language article. However, I'd like to ask you to refrain from changing oecumenic to ecumenic in the last section. I've had to revert it three times already. You are, of course, welcome to modify the content in any way you like, but the text quite deliberately adheres to the classical spelling. If you continue to change this word without adding content, I will complain of vandalism. (<— haste makes waste! stupid of me...) A. Shetsen 03:45, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC). ADDED: Actually, I think I see your difficulty with the word. But "ubiquitous" doesn't quite cover the intended meaning. I've put in a stub article to explain. Nonetheless, maybe the whole section should go. I'm not sure. What do you think? A. Shetsen 04:59, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I quote the message I posted on your talk page:

"Reply from "Spelling" Since you mention the appropriateness of that section, I feel the topic in that section is quite subjective. Surely no one language is more difficult than any other. In any case, look at the section "Difficulties of mastering Japanese" in Japanese language and compare. Peter O. (Talk) 05:03, Jul 24, 2004 (UTC)"

 • Fair enough. It's gone. A. Shetsen 05:15, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

VFD submission[edit]

You put a VFD tag on the article Upsidaisium but you didn't list it in the VFD page. I would argue against it's deletion, but you should probably give a case for deletion on the VFD page if you're going to put the tag on the page. --The demiurge 16:58, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Once again, you have added a vfd header to the Tampax article, but have neglected to list it on the Votes for deletion page. Please complete the process, or don't bother starting it. RickK 23:49, Jul 31, 2004 (UTC)

You've put a VFD notice on Globulation2, but you forgot to list it on the VFD page. I'd also disagree with marking a VFD notice as a "minor" edit. Marking an article to be deleted seems to be one of the more MAJOR things that anyone could do. Joyous 04:19, Aug 1, 2004 (UTC)

...and Park 4DTV as well. I've taken that one down the copyvio route. --rbrwrˆ 21:48, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)

User Pages[edit]

Thank you for the minor edit on my user page. Your change made it proper English, and it does read better that way. You might want to be cautious about editing user pages, though. I didn't mind (actually, I find it interesting to know who has been viewing my user page), but some people might take offense. Usually, a person's talk page is free for anyone to edit, but a user page is semi-sacred. Again, I didn't mind and I thank you. 'See you around. SWAdair | Talk 04:03, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Minor edits[edit]

EVERY edit you make, no matter how significant, you list as minor. This is unacceptable. Please uncheck the Minor Edit box and put an edit summary in the line for that purpose. RickK 19:50, Aug 1, 2004 (UTC)

Edits[edit]

You seem to be "following me around" on Wiki. Are you interested in the things I'm writing about? Just curious. Mike H 00:02, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC)

Timeline[edit]

Thanks for your efforts to fix my timeline on my user page. I was just fooling around with it, and forgot to get it off my main user page when I moved it to User:Mike Storm/sandbox. It's no big deal; you don't have to fix it. But thanks anyway! MikeStorm 22:32, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Chilean Freeways[edit]

I notice you added a VfD tag to this article, but I couldn't find its entry on the VfD page or its archives. While I am inclined to agree with you that the article is useless (at least in its present form), could I politely ask that you list the page or get rid of the tag, as it makes a real mess of Wikipedia to have half-done tasks like that lying around. Also this should not have been listed as a minor edit. Minor edits are for inconsequential things like spelling mistakes. Thanks. — Trilobite (Talk) 02:59, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

That was from July 24; I now am more careful with such matters. Peter O. (Talk) 03:02, Aug 15, 2004 (UTC)

France and religion[edit]

Hi, I saw your remarks that the paragraph on religion in France was "dubious". It would be way better if you went to the Talk:France page and discussed what you felt was dubious. David.Monniaux 09:56, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Jerry Kohn[edit]

Hi, I saw you tagged Jerry Kohn with insane. Can I ask why? Yours, Meelar (talk) 23:17, 2004 Aug 17 (UTC)

Nope, he's real. I've removed the tag (though the guy has a few screws loose himself, IMO). Best wishes, Meelar (talk) 23:23, 2004 Aug 17 (UTC)
As far as I know, anyway. He is a real person, running for Senate. In the absence of some evidence for a nefarious plot, I think this one's legit. Besides, it's not like a ploy would be useful in IL. Best, Meelar (talk) 23:34, 2004 Aug 17 (UTC)

...IS NOT A SPEEDY CANDIDATE. If you think it should be deleted, then you will have to list it on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. Please review Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion before marking any further articles with the delete tag.

Also, in the future, please put the delete tag at the top of the article rather than the bottom. blankfaze | (беседа!) 00:55, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Ladislaus[edit]

Well, most English language sources, including Britannica agree on the spelling Ladislaus, but I didn't have much time lately to change the name back to Ladislaus on all related pages. Ausir 07:50, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Under One Roof[edit]

Hello! You seem to be the one nominate Under One Roof for deletion, but you haven't state the reason. Anyway, do you think the current edition is better? --wshun 10:41, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)

A PAGENAME variable with escapes[edit]

I'd like to see a variant of the PAGENAME that escapes spaces and other characters so that, if the current page were "Article page", it would return "Article%20page". It could be useful in adding article names to external links in URLs. --Poccil

Hello,
From [1], it is implemented in the last version of mediawiki as PAGENAMEE wich render as : "Poccil/archive1". Hashar 14:01, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Record labels[edit]

I notice you marked some of my record labels as "{notable}}". I know some of them are very short, but it is a work in progress. I have a pile of history about hundreds of record labels and it will take some time to add it all...

Please be patient, remove the marks and review them again in some months... okay? warpozio 14:42, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Testament (metal)[edit]

You put a notable tag on Testament (metal). However, you give no reason and neither does the "What's in what's out" page. Although I didn't create it, the band itself is notable, as a Google search will turn up. Yes, it's a substub, but the proper course of action in this case would have been to put it on VfD, or preferrably, do a bit of research on them and at least turn it into a stub. I would have, but I went out for a bit. I'm removing your tag and converting that page into a stub. CryptoDerk 15:20, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

Notable[edit]

Please stop adding notable tags to any article you don't like. If you believe something is not notable enough, take it to VfD. Don't just suggest that things like universities are not encyclopedic when the consensus is that they are. Angela. 15:39, Aug 28, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Poccil: I was convinced for a long time that this was a Don King production, but I found out otherwise. Don King used his company's logo and stars around it for fights promoted by him. This fight had the Iveco logo all over the ring. Moreover, Roberto Duran outpoinited a brave little known English boxer named Jimmy Batten in the card's closing fight. Duran had recently signed with Arum, after being promised a title shot by Arum, who, as you know, to King, Arum is The Devil in person.

Thanks for your interest in the article I originated. It always charms me to know someone is interested in the things I like.

Once again, thanks, and God bless you! Sincerely yours, "Antonio Manson Lover Martin"

Who Says Jimmy Batten was little known maybe in the states but not in the UK. Not much happened in the fight but he did not lose.

JB

In the article on Erik the Red, you have written that Eystribyggð means "Red Dragon" in old swedish. This seems really strange to me. I don't know Old Swedish, but in Norwegian the names of the two villages sound more like "Eystribyggð=Østerbygd=East Village" and "Vestribyggð=Vesterbygd=West Village" to me. Also, since Erik was of Norwegian descent, why would he use Old Swedish? Do you have any source for "Red Dragon"?--MaxMad 09:33, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

You noted this article was a candidate for a re-write on the cleanup page....was curious what needed to be fixed. Thanks.-Tribe 00:14, Sep 6, 2004 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your support during my recent run for adminship. The vote was very much appreciated. I notice that you edit a lot of the same things I do. Perhaps you can drop a note on my talk page and we can chat sometime? Mike H 04:12, Sep 7, 2004 (UTC)

Adina Howard[edit]

I pride myself on my NPOV writing; can you please cite what you find potentially NOT NPOV in the Adina Howard entry? Pacian 11:42, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Though I agree that my phrasing may not be best, I don't know how else to describe it accurately. There is no arguing that Howard's image and marketing showcased her as an object of lust. In her music video she was seen humping a car and spreading her legs wide open (in said outfit.) And, as I mention in the Adina Howard talk page, almost all of her lyrics were sexually explicit. The single cited "Freak Like Me" was literally nothing but Howard cooing about her interest in having kinky sex with other kinky sex lovers. I phrased it in the way I did because, despite the seeming insignifigance of this artist, she WAS a big hit (briefly) and she did open the door for the success of artists like Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown. I encourage you to rephrase anything I entered to be more NPOV if you think it's needed; my only request is that in the future if you put a NPOV warning banner on any entires, you cite something in the talk page so the entrant can SEE what you're talking about and go back and correct it. :) Wikihugs, Pacian 11:53, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hank O'Day[edit]

Just wondering why you deleted the bit I included about his parents being deaf. Here's a link to a relevant story: [2] MisfitToys 09:29, Sep 10, 2004 (UTC)

Could you explain why you think this is not NPOV, instead of just pasting a tag on it. Rmhermen 15:10, Sep 11, 2004 (UTC)

Please feel free to consider it POV, but an explanation of why would help us improve the article. Since I wrote it I would most likely to overlook POV statements in the article. Rmhermen 23:31, Sep 11, 2004 (UTC)

Incorrect removal from Chip Reese[edit]

You removed the statement about 500k being relatively low and him being a good cash player from Chip Reese. 500k is indeed relatively low, and he's not anywhere near the top 100 all time tournament money winners. Since he's in the Poker Hall of Fame, it's necessary to qualify that by saying he's a top notch cash player. I restored the statement and qualified it further. CryptoDerk 16:46, Sep 12, 2004 (UTC)

VfD technique[edit]

I see your entries frequently on VfD and i think also Cleanup, which makes you a good colleague. On the other hand, please examine your recent edit, in which the middle 'graph belongs on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/List_of_116_alleged_MI6_agents instead of Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. (Leaving it there, as i have more than once noticed you doing, further confuses unexperienced editors who click on the "[edit]" link in the same discussion (especially since you delete the warning aimed at them!), thereby encouraging them to post in a way that loses the sequence of votes and discussion. It also may result in your comment being lost from the long-term record of the VfD discussion in question (unless the person transferring to the long-term version is more observant and diligent than you deserve!), and confuse those who later use it to determine who did the nomination.)

Especially if you don't already realize yet how you go wrong, i'd suggest having Template:VfDFooter on screen during the next few nominations for VfD that you enter.

Keep up the good work; we need all we can get, IMO, of people hunting down the "unexploded munitions" lying there in WP after missing their targets! Tnx.

Irish topic, Irish spellings[edit]

Tayto refers to two Irish crisp makers, hence the word crisps should be used, as chips means something completely different in Ireland. I believe this is the standard protocol, as Tayto don't even trade outside of Ireland

give me a break, please. I am working on a whole series of articles related to Tolkien scholarship. A few hours after I created this stub, you marked it as "of doubtful notability". This is not an article about some internet troll club, but about a serious publication of scientific value. Google gives 827 hits. The journal plays a role in the publication of original material by Tolkien, and is involved in the Elfcon dispute I'm currently researching. dab 07:57, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Tagging articles without explanation[edit]

Hi, I just dropped by to mention that your addition of a tag suggesting merger at Yahoo! Games has sparked a discussion at Talk:Yahoo! of which other Yahoo!-related services should be dealt with at Yahoo! rather than on their own page. Perhaps you would like to add your thoughts.

I notice that just above here is a message from someone else who has had their article tagged by you, and in both cases, I notice that you have left no explanation or invitation for discussion at the page in question. It is generally considered good wikiquette to discuss with any editors working on an article if you think there is something wrong with it, rather than simply adding a label to the page, or listing it somewhere. That's not to say you're wrong to draw attention to such issues, but in both these cases a look at the article history would have revealed that they were very new, and therefore a)likely to be more work-in-progress than most, and b)likely to have somebody who would respond if you asked for clarification - a simple note, saying "I wonder if this page is really needed, because..." would probably have been more productive in both these cases.

Oh, and one final whinge before I let you get on with helping out the project: please always fill out the edit summary; it makes things like recent changes and watchlists so much more useful. Right, now I shall stop telling you what to do and what not to do, thank you for your help improving Wikipedia, and get on with doing likewise! :D - IMSoP 15:29, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

British vs American spellings[edit]

Wikipedia policy is that contributors follow the existing style of an article, thus, if an article has American variants (color, behavior, etc), then we stick with that, and if an article has British variants (favour, neighbour), then we stick with that. People do not take kindly to editors altering spellings one way or the other, so I've reverted your changes at Handkerchief code. Exploding Boy 20:32, Sep 22, 2004 (UTC)
