Accents on Puerto Rican names

Joaquin Phoenix

Tony, I understand that this whole thing started with an honest mistake as to whether or not there already existed an article on Joaquin Phoenix (due to the accent over the "i", I presume), but please make your edits to the existing Joaquin Phoenix article. It's ridiculous to suggest that Rick keeps "his" version of the article at Joaquin Phoenix and you work on "your" version at Joaquin Phoenix (Actor), for readers to choose between them. Hi Tony, thanks for your kind words! I actually didn't realise that you hadn't finished writing Maria Elena Holly - I saw it on the new pages list, had a look at it, noticed a typo or two and jumped in to fix them. I'm a pretty avid watcher of Special:Newpages, I tend to at least glance at anything that gets created when I'm online and Wikipedia'ing.

Chita Rivera on being a legend

Hi Tony. Remember that the people giving you advice about NPOV may not know the topic of the article in each case. To my mind it is very common to describe Rivera as a legend, so to attribute to a single quote "XYZ magazine says she is a legend" would be to undersell her. And that is POV too! You should write something like

"Rivera is widely regarded by theatre aficiandos as a "living legend". Indeed InTheare magazine as suggested in an interview: " You must be tired of the term "legend", but let's get it out of the way. You have long been considered a Broadway legend."" Accents in titles

Marine, please take a look around at the other articles about people with non-English names in the Wikipedia: the main articles are invariably located at (eg) François Mitterrand, Horst Köhler, Óscar Romero. Of course, they've all got redirects from the unaccented forms: Francois Mitterrand, Horst Kohler, Oscar Romero, etc. So, if those "English-speakers who don't understand the concept of accents" (ouch! bit patronising, that...) type in Agustin Stahl in the search box, they get taken, by the appropriate redirect, to Agustín Stahl. Please try this out and see how it works; surely Tomás Batista can put up with the same treatment as Pierre Bérégovoy? –Hajor 23:17, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Now that's what they call a damn fine question. I wonder if it does, anywhere... custom is certainly to put them on, but maybe you're right, maybe it isn't set in stone anywhere. I'm sure there are several Wiki-stalwarts furiously searching even as we speak and, if they don't find anything, steps will be taken to make it policy asap.

However, one more comment: while you're right that you can buy books about PR (and about Mexico and anywhere else in Latin America) that don't use accents on the names, take a look inside some serious history books. Some encyclopedias. I've just opened up my Encyclopaedia Britannica, and I can assure you it's talking about "Muñoz Marín" and "Hernández Colón". Glad you approve of what I did to Capt. R-D. Hopefully, the user who placed the POV flag on it will see the changes -- otherwise, I suppose you could drop him a line and ask him to take a look. If there's anything he still objects to, he should probably have a go at fixing it himself or (at the very least) identifying the disputed sections on Talk.
Re the Cardinal: apparently, putting the name that way is the correct approach ("correct" in the sense of what the Style Manual asks us to do) -- see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles), scrolling down to "Clerical Names". List of famous Puerto Ricans and Category:Puerto Rican people

Hello Tony! First of all, thanks for all your magnificient contributions to the pedia.

I'm a little worried about your inclusion of List of famous Puerto Ricans to every article about a Puerto Rican. You see, back in the days when we didn't have Categories, we used lists to navigate between articles. However, now that we have them, we use the categories rather than the lists. In other words, there is no need to include the list on every article, or better said, there is no need to include the list on any article afterall. Use the categories instead. The article is great, but the categories are much better for its purpose.

About Category:Puerto Rico and Category:Puerto Rican people: if you are listing a person under the category, check first which categories are its parents. For example, listing Don Cholito under both Category:Puerto Rican people and Category:Puerto Rican comedians is unneccessary because Category:Puerto Rican people is a parent of Category:Puerto Rican comedians. That is, Category:Puerto Rican comedians falls under Puerto Rican people. That is what we call nesting. Check Category:Universities and colleges for a fine example. Imagine the mess that we would create if we list every topic related to Puerto Rico under Category:Puerto Rico. That is why the different sub-categories were created for, to avoid this.

Marine 69-71:
Couldn't the "Category: Puerto Rican people" be renamed to something like "Category:Puerto Rican famous people" or something similar. The only reason I ask is because "Puerto Rican people" sounds so "in general" and not specific enough.

The problem with that is that it would create a controversy between who or what is being famous or not. For example, for Puerto Ricans Sandra Zaiter is "famous"... but for the international community she is not. If you want, you can simply create more specific categories under the People's category. Like what you did with Category:Puerto Rican sportspeople and Category:Puerto Rican comedians... heck you can even create Category:Puerto Rican basketball players under Category:Puerto Rican sportspeople if you want. =) We avoid using the "famous" adjective when describing someone. For example, List of Navy-Vieques protesters and supporters was originally List of famous Navy-Vieques protesters and supporters.

Bernie Williams

The reason I moved the Bernie Williams article to "Bernie Williams (born 1968)" is that eventually there will have to be a "Bernie Williams (born 1948)" article, and it's necessary to disambiguate them. Yes, I'm a Yankee fan, born early enough that I remember when the Yankee centerfielder was a fellow named DiMaggio! (Though he retired the year after I got interested in baseball, leaving centerfield to another pretty good fellow named Mantle!) -- BRG 17:45, Aug 23, 2004 (UTC)

Hiya.. sure, I'll give it a go. What name do you think the article should be under, though? Not being American and not known anything about baseball, I've never heard of the guy, so I don't know what name he's most commonly known by. Ah. I see you knew that already and were in the process of fixing it. I'm not sure whether he should go at "Rubén Gómez" or Rubén Gómez Colón" but, yeah, wherever he ends up, we need to be more generous in creating redirect pages, particularly for esos latinos locos with two or more surnames and funny accented characters in their names. Hi, Tony. I can see the problem that article's causing on Category:Puerto Rican people and Category:Golfers but -- most curiously -- not on Category:Puerto Rican sportspeople. You've got me scratching my head with this one, pal. I have no idea what's going on. Maybe it's a known bug; maybe it's something that will settle down and cure itself in a day or two. I saw something like this once before, when browsing the list of new pages. That also involved an article with " in the name. I couldn't figure it out then and I can't figure it out now. :-) But, I do seem to recall, that the problem went away later. AOL vandalbots and blocks

Hi; I'm sorry about that. There really isn't a way to avoid it currently, because for some reason logged-in AOL users such as yourself are affected by IP blocks. That's why I set it for only two hours; long enough to stop the bot (for the meantime) but hopefully short enough not to disrupt too many users. So unless you were to switch ISPs (to one that does not use proxies), the occasional block is something you'll have to endure. :(

To answer your second question; essentially, a vandalbot is (usually) an automated script that makes malicious edits to random articles at a high rate. For an in-depth explanation, see m:Vandalbot. Regards, -- Hadal 02:13, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

User page vandalism

Hi Tony! Unfortunately, that IP address that vandalised your talk page (and the nearby but not identical IP that vandalised your user page, I just rolled that back) is an AOL proxy server. I'm a little hesitant to block it due to the potential of innocent editors also being blocked just because they use AOL and hit the same proxy. Seems that every time someone blocks an AOL proxy it gets unblocked anyway, and there's whining and complaining on the mailing list. :-(

Hi Tony, hope you are doing well. Sure, I have no problem of moving it to Grito de Lares. I moved it back because you moved it manually and when you do so, we lose the article's history (the edit history). When things like that happen again, you have to ask for the moving point to be deleted. In this case, ask for Grito de Lares to be deleted. Then, once it is deleted, go to Lares Cry and click on the "move" link at the top of the article and just follow instructions in order to move that whole article to Grito de Lares. While patrolling New Pages, I came across Luisa Capetillo, which seems to come from [1]. Although that is an anarchist site, I do not see anywhere that they waive their right to copyright. Such a notice may be on their site and I may have missed simply missed it. Normally I would have marked it as copyvio and moved on. Since you are an established user whom I doubt would knowingly violate copyright, I thought I would ask first. Can you verify the copyright ownership of that text? Thank you. Umm... you still might want to modify things like that a little bit before submitting them -- just rephrase it in your own words. Copying even short paragraphs verbatim sort of rides the line on copyright. I'm glad to see all the work you're doing on notable Puerto Ricans. I forgot to add, I have noticed that you use the convenience (born _year_ in _place_) for your biographical articles. Although there are no rules for how you write them, the general convenience is to use (born in _year_) is _profession_ from _place_. I agree it probably is a little rude to rework the article despite the fact several people said it was fine. That said, I think you're right, it's not worth getting into an edit war over, since the reworked version is still OK and an edit war would really serve no purpose. You're far better off just moving on and keeping up the good work in writing articles than getting bogged down with people on talk pages, in my opinion. Lolita Lebron

Hi, Tony. I, personally, have never had a problem with the word "terrorist" being used if the definition fits. Words have exact meanings, after all. IMO, "freedom fighters" attempt to gain a tactical or strategical military advantage, while "terrorists" attempt to gain only a psychological advantage through the use of terror. However, I do see a problem with the sentence that you mentioned. The paragraph begins "Lolita has received many honors" and goes on to list honors she has received. The first sentence of the Washington Post article makes it very clear the article is not intended as an honor. That reference does add a lot of detail that is not in our article, and the additional detail probably justifies a link to it. We can't change what the Post named their article, but we can choose how we display the link. I've moved it to an external links section and changed how it is presented.
