LoPbN Merges[edit]

Merges of List of people by name pages should be done in the way that minimizes the hiding of history beneath the resulting redirects. (And an analogous, but more nuanced, principle applies to splits.) In the case of merging Kv thru Kz into Kv and then renaming Kv to Kv-Kz, the 4 Kw names' history is buried in the Kw redirect's history. It can of course be retrieved by a clear-thinking user, and yes, some history has to be hidden, but consolidating into Kw and renaming it instead of Kv would have hidden only 20% of the names' histories instead of 100%. Not a big deal, but the Kw choice would have eventually saved confusion for the least sophisticated users who go looking for histories. Tnx for your attention. --Jerzy(t) 17:32, 2004 Apr 1 (UTC)

Yes, I actually realised that shortly after I had already performed the move. Next time I'll be wiser. Thanks for pointing it out. — Timwi 19:12, 1 Apr 2004 (UTC)

in earnest[edit]

"Earnest" was spelled correctly in the virtual history article: "earnest" with an 'a' is the adjective, "Ernest" without an 'a' is the name. --Paul A 03:49, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out. I looked it up, and you're right. Yet another spelling misconception of mine shattered! :-) — Timwi 06:41, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)

(PS. wandering off the topic: It says on your user page, I noticed on the way here, that you're responsible for the wiki's current handling of self-links. Thank you for that; it's a valuable contribution.)

Thanks a lot for your encouragement. I really appreciate it! :) — Timwi 06:41, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Mitsubishi[edit]

Timwi, the mitsubishi group articles are a huge and complex system or interrelated companies and concepts. Mitsubishi is a recognized brand worldwide, and many companies share the name. Yet Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Inc. is not Mitsubishi, not in the sense that Boeing Corp is Boeing. I would appreciate an effort at a return to the previous status, since it took me many hours to figure this all out. Thanks in advance. Christopher Mahan 09:26, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I have no idea what you're talking about. As far as I can tell, I never touched any of those articles. — Timwi 11:11, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Angela kindly found out for me that you may be talking about this edit. This is almost a week ago, so I didn't remember. Please take a look at the edit summary: I fixed a double-redirect there. It was already pointing at Mitsubishi, but via a detour. I didn't actually change anything except for making something work which didn't. — Timwi 11:19, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Just change the example[edit]

I wanted to keep the m:Extension Syntax/Example page as simple as possible. Perhaps, compare with example we can found in Wikipedia, the math example is a big one, but hiero is small one and music is a tiny one (real score take several lines). If you think, the math is "too" long, just replace the example with a smaller one, but I'd like you remove your comment witch make the page more complex to read. Aoineko 10:25, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Please just leave it ... :/ — Timwi 20:53, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Abuse of sysop powers[edit]

  • 21:51, 6 Apr 2004 Timwi deleted "Boys are stupid, throw rocks at them" (content was: '#REDIRECT List_of_T-shirt_slogans')
  • 21:51, 6 Apr 2004 Timwi deleted "List of T-shirt slogans" (content was: ''I'm with stupid →← I'm with stupid'I'm with stupid

This is what I found in the Wikipedia:Deletion log. It seems nothing can be taken for granted these days, not even the seven day period and of course the discussion on VfD. All our sophisticated rules won't work if sysops abuse their power in that way. I have posted that message on the Village pump, too. <KF> 20:14, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Instead of getting so worked up over it and starting such an uprising, perhaps you should cool down a bit and think rationally. Then it might occur to you that I might have acted in good faith, and that a friendly notice would have been more constructive and helpful. The correct places to post this are Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion and Wikipedia:Requests for review of admin actions. — Timwi 20:20, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Thank you. I'm cool now. As I have tried to point out, there's an ever increasing number of special pages. I'm quite happy that I can remember some of them, but how should I know there is a place called Wikipedia:Requests for review of admin actions?!?
Let me add that the List of T-shirt slogans page was not my idea. I just saw it and corrected a spelling mistake. It was obviously in its very early stages -- I was expecting "My brother went to (name of city) and all I got is this lousy T-shirt" to be the next contribution. But I had also been envisaging a longer articles, maybe even with images. This is my old question really: Why nip it in the bud? All the best to you, <KF> 20:36, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)
There is nothing stopping you from creating a List of T-shirt slogans if you wish. — Timwi 20:49, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Defective redirects[edit]

Do you think the Defective redirects page is obsolete because:

  1. it is empty?
    • For a long time, I was the only one updating it. Now that I have a script to fix the double-redirects right away, I no longer need to list them there.
  2. no new double redirects are being created?, or
    • They are regularly created when people move pages, but for as long as I'm here no double-redirect will survive for longer than a week (because I continually download the cur dump and fix all double-redirects I find in it).
  3. the wikipedia software now handles double redirects gracefully?
    • The software doesn't, but I do. :-) — Timwi 10:03, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Inquiring minds want to know. 8-> --ssd 02:42, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I hope the above comments answer your question. :-) Thanks for asking, though! — Timwi 10:03, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Mostly they do. About half of the new double redirects involved disambiguation pages, and those can't be fixed autmatically, as you gotta pick the right disambiguation. Other similar problems are possible. I can only assume you're doing these right. --ssd 03:26, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Frederik[edit]

Thanks for taking care of the Frederik pic. RickK 21:07, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)

plague[edit]

I figured you had something to say about it, thats why I asked you first ;) Sam Spade 01:29, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I like what you did btw. Sam Spade 06:41, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)
OK, good :-) — Timwi 20:50, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Jannat al Baqi.jpg[edit]

(about Image:Jannat al Baqi.jpg)

Good job removing it, you were correct in reference to its stated source.

The website from which it was taken, takes its images from a site called al-islam.org whose image use policy states that non-commercial educational websites may use these images if they name them as the source. Which I have done on the image, as such - I wish to restore the image to the article. --OldakQuill 15:17, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Please mention on the image description page where you got that image use policy from (i.e. give a link). In general, you must always provide all links and references that are necessary for someone else to verify that what you are stating is true. — Timwi 15:28, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Good job[edit]

Good job on the sound clips, they sound great. Two languages done, a bajillion more to go :) In case you feel like doing some more pronunciation work, here are a couple more pages that I was thinking about:

Thank you! — Timwi 17:28, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)

thanks[edit]

for fixing all those double redirects I made :S Cheers, Sam Spade 22:30, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Purely routine :-) — Timwi 22:52, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Russian accent[edit]

Please do not remove accent marks from Russian words. The character ́ (U+0301) is "combining acute accent" (maybe your browser does not display it correctly?). It is important to know the place of accent in Russian! — Monedula 17:39, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I know what the character is for, and I know what it signifies when used in Russian. However, that doesn't make it part of official/real Russian orthography, so I'm weary of creating that impression. — Timwi 18:45, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)
The official/real Russian orthography leaves the use of accent entirely to the writers' discretion. We are free to use it whenever we feel it necessary to indicate the place of accent. However, the advent of computers has somewhat broken this tradition, because until recently they could not handle Russian accents. — Monedula 18:57, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Your bot[edit]

Your "fix double redir" bot is doing good stuff. If you want to make it its own name, I'd be willing to sponsor it for a bot flag - just talk to Angela/Anthère/Mav/TimStarling on IRC to get the flag set. Pakaran. 21:30, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thanks, but I don't really want to create a separate account for it. If you feel it is flooding Recent Changes too much, please let me know and I'll increase the wait delay (I actually think I forgot to set it at all this time). — Timwi 19:43, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Recordings[edit]

Hi, yes, I still plan on doing them, thanks for the friendly reminder :) It's just that I've been busy with end of the semester things. You go right ahead, don't feel as if it has to be done alphabetically :) Dori | Talk 16:26, Apr 29, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. I've done the German tongue-twisters. :-) — Timwi 18:59, 29 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Stroke[edit]

Hello, why did you move Cerebrovascular accident to Stroke? My impression is that stroke is rather colloquial term. Sure, we should use a popular common name but "cerebrovascular accident" is so minor? -- Taku 05:43, Apr 30, 2004 (UTC)

Three reasons. A: Before I saw the page, I didn't know any other term than "stroke" for it. I expect that other people who do not have any medical background or education may be in the same situation. B: Everything links to stroke. Very few of the links actually link to Cerebrovascular accident. C: The top of the page said "for other meanings, see Stroke (disambiguation)". I think it looks really stupid to have that on a page that isn't even titled "stroke". — I'll move the page back, please leave it there. Thanks. — Timwi 09:24, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Why did you think the article was named something other than stroke before?

A - many people don't know the full time or officla name. In wikipedia, more propoer, technical term is more preferable, if may sound too technical. For example, aging is redirected to senescence; teenager to adolescence because those are more concrete, unambigous term. If they don't know a proper term, the redirect will lead them to the proper page anyway. Also, tou didn't response to my point: stroke is a colloquial term.
B - true but it means really nothing about what title is appreciate.
C - why stupid? To me, Chicago, Illinois sounds stupider than just plain Chicago.

I will restore the title of article to what it was before unless you still disagree, which I suspect, so let's go to the talk page of stroke and keep discussing or voting process. -- Taku 14:50, Apr 30, 2004 (UTC)

Most of what you said doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe you should improve your English a little before you start discussing things related to English language or English terms. For example:
Why did you think the article was named something other than stroke before?
Huh? What the heck are you talking about? The article was named cerebrovascular accident and not stroke. I moved it! — I'm sorry I didn't "response" (?) to your point... what point exactly? "Stroke" is a "colloquial" term in a sense, yes ... so what? We do want colloquial and less formal terms when people are likely to be unfamiliar with the formal term. Thanks for pointing out senescence (never heard that term), I'll move that too. — Timwi 17:04, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)
If you don't know English, or more precisely what a proper formal language is, then you might want to study it before you start this. My teacher always says that you are an English speaker really doesn't mean you know technical languages. English used in encyclopedias or academia is a bit different--this you may not know. Anyhow, you don't understand me so I guess I have to repeat. The article was under a name of cerebrovascular accident for a while. No one had questioned about it. So again why do we have to use a term that is less concrete, more ambigous while there is a proper one. True, not everyone knows technical jagons. That is why the article mentions it is commonly known as stroke. Articles in wikipedia are of educational purpose. We are not advertising anything so there is no need for making the article look less formal, accurate. Making things more accessible is necessary but we should not sacrify the accuracy for it. Oh, what about adolescence so you have heared that word in this time? Good for you. Anyhow, if you think you cannot discuss with me, then I have to go to revert it. -- Taku 20:30, Apr 30, 2004 (UTC)
I reverted things back. I assume you see my point. -- Taku 15:34, May 1, 2004 (UTC)
Of course I see your point – that doesn't mean I agree with you. — Timwi 22:17, 1 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
