Taxes

NPOV: Problems

Hello, I am from Gretna, Nebraska and I have marked the Problems section as non-neutral point of view. Currently, there is a legal battle between Gretna and I believe the rest of Sarpy County, and I will explain this. Sarpy County is a location in Nebraska with a quickly expanding population. Gretna's point of view is that they need to find a way to control the zoning of the areas that are expanding. A few years ago, Gretna wanted to annex a portion of State Highway 370 east of Gretna for two miles to 180th Street and US Highway 6 south of Gretna for one mile so they can have greater control for zoning the land around it. These stretches of highway extend outside of the city limits, and currently the land surrounding these stretches of highways are farmland, but are not considered to be rural farmland because Gretna is close enough to Omaha. I don't believe any town has ever successfully annexed a highway in Nebraska, and I've only heard about it being attempted one other time. As a reaction, the other cities in Sarpy County, notably Papillion, Springfield, and I believe Bellevue decided to sue Gretna for attempting to annex the portions of highways, without even making an effort to settle this matter outside of court first. This section of this article is non-neutral because it reflects a biased opinion ,and the author--whose anonymous IP registers its location as Bellevue--wanted to make Gretna look bad in the process. -68.226.61.4 07:46, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

When I get the chance to, I will research what I do not know about this topic and I will edit the page with what I find out, unless someone beats me to it. Does anyone from any other region consider a 7% sales tax as a problem? (considering that the median household income in the area in question is over $50k US) For some reason I don't. -137.48.130.200 18:31, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

--Actually, I wrote this section of the article with the dispute between Bellevue and Papillion School Districts in mind. Gretna did not even pop into my mind until you mentioned it here. Personally, I like the idea of annexation for purposes of zoning control. You're referring to Bellevue's One City, One District plan, similar to Omaha's infamous plan of the same name, I understand now. I think the very header "Problems" is NPOV in this case. I don't think a 7% sales tax is in and of itself a problem, or for that matter that its "problem-ness" is a factual matter -- it is a matter of opinion. Fire and EMS coverage

I've edited out, and am about to revert the re-addition of, a list of all the fire departments covering Sarpy County, with their number of stations and their status as volunteer, military, or professional departments. The editor who inserted it justified the insertion as "added so residents and potential residents to Sarpy Co know info about who and where they are going to be covered from/by".

This does not strike me as encyclopedic information; indeed, it seems like the sort of thing excluded by WP:NOTDIRECTORY, a.k.a. WP:NOTEVERYTHING. Wikipedia is not a place for people to find out where to get their laundry done, where to find good Thai food, who's a reliable plumber—or who to call when they set fire to the curtains, or when Uncle Bob clutches his chest and keels over at the dinner table. If we're to list all the fire/EMS departments, I see no reason why we shouldn't also list all the restaurants, all the electricians, all the hardware stores, all the churches...

I've left in a brief account stating the number of departments, and mentioning the fact that they vary as to professional vs. military vs. volunteer. Any more information than that would be the beginning of turning this article into a complete Sarpy County directory. Ammodramus (talk) 03:25, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
