Untitled[edit]

This article seems to be more about The Jim Rome Show than Jim himself.

It really needs to be split into two articles, one which is more of a biography of Jim, and another, perhaps titled The Jim Rome Show, to focus on the show itself.

If there are no objections, I will give this one week (until July 10, 2005) and do it myself.

Zpb52 July 3, 2005 18:21 (UTC)

It is done[edit]

With zero objections posted in the last week, I have moved the content about Jim's radio show to its own article, The Jim Rome Show. A successful article split. Zpb52 16:22, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

Jim Rome Is Burning[edit]

Has anyone considered creating an article on JRIB? It may not have the notoriety of the Jungle but is still a staple show on ESPN and should get some attention here at Wikipedia. I'd do it but I don't get to watch it because of my work schedule. Willbyr 19:27, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rome has two sons.[edit]

Doesn't Rome have two sons? Jake is the older one, and Logan was born sometime in 2005 wasn't he? --Saxonjf 03:31, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Yes, that is correct, I'll update it. Doctorindy 20:22, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Birthplace[edit]

IMDB lists his birthplace as Tarzana, California, USA....Wiki has it as Calabasas, CA. Can we have a difinative source linked or listed? KsprayDad 17:32, 10 March 2006 (UTC) ps...thanks for the Userbox! I've altered mine a bit on my talk page...here is a sample:[reply]

Jim mentioned today on his show (06/19/2018) that he was born in Los Angeles and not Tarzana. Audio source: https://www.stucknut.com/takebox/?id=2346 — Preceding unsigned comment added by JungleClone (talkcontribs) 19:23, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

IMDb says Rome was born in Tarzana[edit]

According to IMDb, Jim Rome was born in Tarzana, California. As there is no reference to at all, I intend to add that.--The Saxon 00:10, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Broadcast style section[edit]

The section on Rome's broadcast style could use a serious POV trim, and I wonder if it's appropriate for this article or if it needs to be moved to the Jim Rome Show article. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 13:47, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jim Rome uses degrotary neologisms to refer to some cities, His referring to Omaha as "Bugaha" is not. Rome calls Omaha Bugaha because the name for the University of NEbraska football team was the "Bugeaters." Rome combined Bugeater with Omaha to come up with Bugaha. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stan sipple (talkcontribs) 04:35, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

POV?[edit]

Hi, I came here to see what the rationale for the POV tag was. Since there doesn't appear to be one perhaps the tag should be removed? Jorbettis 16:02, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The section on his broadcast style needs some work done on it to make it a little more formal sounding and less like something that might have come off of Stucknut or another fan forum...it's a good start but not quite there. That section, I believe, is what the tag is referring to. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 02:52, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Everett Interview[edit]

Not sure if a link to this should be included in the article but the video of the Everett interview is on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HNgqQVHI_8 should someone want to put it into the article.  Argash  |  talk  |  contribs  06:31, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that YouTube links are appropriate by Wikipedia guidelines. There's got to be a news article somewhere with a valid link to the video, that should do. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 12:20, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a reference for it not being appropriate? The link is free and it's directly relevant. If there was a news site with the video, I think that would be preferred, but otherwise IMO a YouTube link ought to be fine. Nairebis 15:14, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hang on...I think I misunderstood the initial question. The YouTube link would be fine as an imbedded link but not as an actual reference to "The Incident"; for that, a printed article somewhere would be appropriate. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 15:28, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rome being a Jew[edit]

In regards to whether or not to include Rome being a Jew in the lead section - I see where you're going with the policy, but it makes an exception if the person's ethnicity is notable. Since Rome's been inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, I'd say this qualifies as notability. Also, Willie in KC is now an infamous figure on the show because Rome perma-banned him for an anti-Semitic joke. It's not a life-or-death issue for me one way or the other, but I think this bears mentioning. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 17:19, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kudos for bringing this to the talk page. When I first started editing on a regular basis, I was adding in ethnicities too, until someone pointed me to the MoS. Personally, I don't see the reason why we shouldn't include it, but it does seem to be the way things are done. Is being Jewish notable to [Jim Rome's] notability? Sure, he's a notable Jew, but is he notable for his Jewish-ness? I won't change it back this time, but I think someone else probably will, consensus seems to have been reached already. Cheers, faithless (speak) 20:13, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we'll have to wait and see. "Is he notable for being a Jew" is a great question...I don't know if he makes much about it. I can do some asking on Stucknut and see if there's any info. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 20:58, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it is at all notable. I've been listening to the show for years and I have never once heard him even allude to being Jewish. I brought it up with some friends that have been listening to the show for a lot longer than I have, and none of them had any idea. With as many opportunities as he has had to discuss his religion, he has gone out of his way NOT to talk about it. You might be able to make a case that it belongs in the article somewhere, but it absoultely does not belong in the first sentence. Cacophony 19:27, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And since the Manual of Style says Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability., it should be removed, IMO. faithless (speak) 19:56, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 20:29, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good discussion. Since Jim Rome is a successful sports journalist and commentator, I believe we should mention his Jewish ethnicity. In cases where our people are up to no good, we need to remain vigilant over Wikipedia editing. For example, with discussions of financial fraud, pornography, organized crime, human trafficking, espionage, mass third world immigration for everyone but Israel, and the sponsorship of Bolshevism: we need to keep those articles free of Jewish references. For articles related to Nobel Prizes and the like, by all means mention Jewish ethnicity. 192.40.24.4 (talk) 21:00, 22 August 2017 (UTC) Shandafurdie[reply]

Could someone update the page for his Jewish HOB biography, it's a broken link, here is the new link, I don't know how to fix it. http://www.scjewishsportshof.com/rome.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.142.98.38 (talk) 21:16, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

True Age[edit]

Some are saying that Rome was really born 10 years earlier than is listed. It appears to me that someone associated with Rome has been messing up this article to make Rome look 10 years younger by changing the dates on everything from birthday to high school 71.206.238.90 (talk) 03:28, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A quick google search seems to suggest that the date we currently have (October 14, 1964) is correct. Do you have any reliable sources that indicate that what we have is incorrect? Apparition11 (talk) 03:44, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Rome states his age on his radio show regularly. He is 44. Mike R (talk) 20:21, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Emailers[edit]

"The most famous emailers like Dave in St. Louis "Non-Hunter," Chad in Portland, Francis in Glendale, Herb in Atascadero, Mike in Edmonton, Brian in Syracuse, Blaise in KC, Dave no longer in Albany, Clay in Buffalo, Tim Bauer in Lincoln, Mike T in C-Town and Scott near Beaverton have their emails read repeatedly, even by guest host substitutes such as Jim Lampley and Andrew Siciliano. They have said "The hottest topic in The Jungle is The Jungle."

This part needs to be updated. Herb in Atascader, Mike T in C-Town, and Francis in Glendale no longer have email frequently read. Francis, referred to as "THE Francis in Glendale" was subsequently blocked after multiple fat jokes.

Additionally, a new wave of emailers have emerged who have their emails read frequently by Jim Rome. These emailers include Craig in Tampa, Brian in Santa Monica, Mike in Chicago "Non 7-Wood User," and Eric in Falls Church (Rome refers to him as "Entitlement Eric")

Jim Rome plays the song "Loser" by Beck in the background every time he reads an email from Eric in Falls Church

Eric Wynalda[edit]

The Eric Wynalda supposed 'Suck my dick' quotation is not sourced or no longer sourced. I propose we ditch that little bit of nonsense.

Horse Racing[edit]

Someone should update the Horse Racing section of Jim Rome's wikipedia article. It should mention that Mizdirection, who twice won the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint, was nominated for an Eclipse Award, and was sold at auction for $2.7 million.

Also, someone really needs to mention that Jim Rome is again on the Kentucky Derby trail with 3 year old colt, Shared Belief, who won the Eclipse Award for Champion 2 Year Old Male, and who has his own wikipedia page, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_Belief.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.10.38.67 (talk) 22:01, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article needs some updating, agreed, though as a WP:BLP we must source everything as we go, which is probably what slows this down. As for Shared Belief, he can be mentioned for the Eclipse, but I wouldn't get too crazy about the Kentucky Derby trail until we know that quarter crack healed and he's racing again. Montanabw(talk) 05:03, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jim Harbaugh Incident[edit]

Someone should add, under the "Controversies" section, the spat between Jim Rome and Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. After Rome called him on the carpet on his show for being rude to the media, Harbaugh Tweeted at Rome to remind him of what Jim Everett did to him on Talk2. --108.234.242.106 (talk) 02:43, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Everett incident description problem[edit]

This line seems to be a little POV:

"Rome continued his taunt, causing Everett to overturn the table between them and shove Rome to the floor while still on the air."

It reads as if Rome somehow forced Everett to flip the table. The "cause" here was Everett's temper. A more NPOV wording would be:

"After Rome continued addressing him as "Chris", Everett overturned the table between them and shoved Rome to the floor while still on the air." 97.91.249.83 (talk) 10:44, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree with the above assessment. I've edited that paragraph a bit to attempt a WP:NPOV. GauchoDude (talk) 13:08, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

College graduation date[edit]

On today's (12) show in the third hour, he said he graduated from UCSB in 1986. One would think that he would get the year right, but it conflicts with the two sources in the article (likely only one since the other probably quotes the first) which say 1987. Mapsax (talk) 00:05, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It appears UCSB also recognizes the '87 date as the initial source indicates (which is/was Rome's own website). This can be viewed here and here on page 17. It appears as though some other sources note the '86 date such as here and here. My own OR: reading the Independent article noting a "December '86" graduation would account for that year/date, however unless something was different back then UCSB only recognizes one commencement (see When can I graduate and earn my degree?). As such and it being a university award, I would personally stick with the UCSB sourcing, leaning me towards keeping '87. GauchoDude (talk) 15:11, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That explains why he seemed to be contradicting himself. I would lean toward listing both dates. I don't think most readers would know about a distinction between an actual graduation and an officially recognized one. What really matters is the date on his diploma.
