War of 1812 and General Brock[edit]

Hey Lord Bob. Thanks for your Berton reference on the War of 1812 talk page -- I've also heard it as "a mere matter of marching" rather than "a matter of marching." I don't have a reliable reference to point to and can't even cite the source (a Jefferson letter, speech, article...?) but if I stumble on one, I'll post it.

Regarding your interest in General Brock and the battle of Queenston Heights: I attended Brock University in St. Catharines in the 1970s and have been mildly interested in both Sir Isaac and War of 1812 history ever since. So, I've kept something of an eye out for tv programs and websites on both subjects since.

You may find these two sites of interest; I've bookmarked them but not gone through them entirely.

http://www.generalbrock.com/

http://www.galafilm.com/1812/

I enjoyed watching the Galafilm documentary series, FWIW, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Their upcoming companion CD-ROM also looks good.

Best wishes for your educational plans. And if you ever get down near Niagara Falls, do visit the Brock U. campus; in Pond Inlet, one of the quiet corners of the campus, they have a chunk of the original Brock sculpture from when the first Queenston Heights monument was blown up. So you can actually sit on Sir Isaac's shoulder. :)

Cheers,

- Patrick, Madmagic 22:59, Apr 11, 2004 (UTC)

More 1812 etc.[edit]

I'm not likely to be doing much more on the War of 1812, but I have looked over most (I think...) of the major Wikipedia pages related to the Military history of Canada, and it would appear more filling in of major gaps -- and something of a reorganization of that page -- are both badly needed.

Currently the Military history of Canada page itself contains a lot less on WWI (two paragraphs and some points with a link or two) than on 1812; the WWII section was a single paragraph yesterday (!) and even doubling the number of words and links now there would barely outline the major issues.

A question: Is there a place on Wikipedia (outside of the Village Pump & newcomers VP) where one can recruit others to help out with a page re-organization? Or is that just something to post on the relevant Talk page, and then go at it, following existing examples, the FAQs and style guides?

Since working on the WWII section and Intrepid page yesterday/ last night, it's occurred to me that one first step might be to create a sub-page off my User:madmagic page, and start a simple list-of-links, within Military history of Canada and related pages.

This isn't menat to be a page for public use, so much as a reference guide and fast navigation aid -- for the process of researching and then for internal linking, whenever I'm filling in gaps or trying to figure out the most practical way of re-ordering existing articles.

I'll likely do some work on that tonight and over the next few days. Check my page if you're interested and/or you want to comment/contribute. And thanks for your kind comments. :)

Cheers,

-Patrick Madmagic 04:57, Apr 12, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Lord Bob, I found you when I read your comment at the vote regarding Pro-American sentiment. Unfortunately no one has yet taken care of it. But there are more important things. I started a project about learning, mainly vocabulary. Some guys discussed it with me on my user page. Since you are in the period of life where learning has a special focus I hope you are interested. If so, please let me know there as well. By the way, I spent a year in Toronto, and I like Canada a lot. Get-back-world-respect 01:10, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, well, I know qbasic sucks. It is just that I cannot program well in anything else than basic. Can you? I want to learn something better, just cannot make up my mind if I should opt for Java - which I once tried and found more difficult than basic - C++ or python. Malicious Deletion Attempt[edit]

Hello. Sorry for the imposition, but I thought you might be interested to note that an article you supported in the past on vfd has been listed again under malicious circumstances - the 3rd such attempt in 7 months. Please feel free to review the discussion and cast your vote as you feel appropriate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Atlantium --Gene_poole 10:33, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Could you have another look at Opposition to Castro? I'm not sure what it was like when you looked at it (I gather is started out very POV), but at this point it looks to me like the nucleus of a good article. -- Jmabel | Talk 20:17, Nov 5, 2004 (UTC)

Wikinews demo up and running[edit]

Hi!

I'm writing to let you know that the Wikimedia Board of Trustees has approved the first stage of the Wikinews project. There's now a fully operational English demo site at demo.wikinews.org. This will be used for experimenting with various review models and basic policies before the site is launched officially in about a week. demo.wikinews.org will become the English version later.

You voted for the Wikinews project, so I'm asking for your participation now. Everything is open, nothing is final. What Wikinews will and can be depends in large part on you. There already is a global Wikinews mailing list for discussing the project. If you are interested at all, please subscribe -- coordination is of key importance. There's also an IRC channel #wikinews on irc.freenode.net. Realtime discussion can help to polish up articles.

If you're looking for something to do, check out the articles in development and articles in review. Or start a new story in the Wikinews workspace, or ignore the proposed review system - it's up to you. I hope you'll join us soon in this exciting experiment.--Eloquence* 01:58, Nov 17, 2004 (UTC)

You voted to keep this article. Since your vote new comments have established that its speculative since such a periodic table is just a conjecture which is already treated on the anti-matter page. Would you mind either commenting on the comments (if you think they don't justify deletion) or changing your vote?? Mozzerati 15:33, 2004 Nov 20 (UTC)

Your deletion strategy[edit]

Seems to me, that you have a lot of deleting going on - I saw your name in Dickinson High School, and it offended me somehow. First - because you put a Lord in front of your name and second because you haven't returned and added comments to the changes of the page. Now - could it be, that it is because of the first problem, that you must see some notability around, before you care? Or is it simply because you are of anti-initiative nature and want the world to concentrate on 1812-like events?

Please give room for more things to be described - and learn to be positive. Wikipedia can contain a lot of things incl. as many High Schools as it takes. Don't you know, that a school gets a special place in the heart of a human being - a thing to be remembered and not deleted in your memory? Or did you have some bad experience, when you went to school - so that you don't want to be reminded?

In an open society - like that of a Wikipedia - I see no reason for not including everything, that a person want to put into it. If you don't care about it, just don't read it and go on with what you like in your life. It's OK to tell the contributor (that's me), that the article needs improvement - and luckily someone did - but do want it deleted just because there is no Lords or Dragons or Generals or whatever from a specific High School - that's beyond my imagination.

So ... my good Lord - a good and sound advice is to become positive in an ever changing world. And give a helping hand, if need be. --Hansjorn 06:23, Dec 4, 2004 (UTC)

Henry Proct_r[edit]

If you ever get around to doing an article about General Henry Proctor, please note that people spell his name both "Proctor" and "Procter". "Proctor" seems to be more widely used, but "Procter" seems to be preferred by more trustworthy sources. --Kevin Myers 05:13, May 16, 2005 (UTC)

Hello! You don't know me, but I'm working on getting Isaac Brock as a feature article. It's in peer review right now. In any case, I've written a Henry Procter stub (it was a red link in Isaac Brock, and I couldn't have that), and I have Proctor as a redirect. If you have time, take a look at it. It's pretty bare bones.
Best Wishes. --Scimitar 23:24, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Elizabeth II renaming (round XXXIV)[edit]

You may have noticed *mega sigh* that yet another user has dragged up the lets rename Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom farce, only 9 days after the last vote ended. (What next? A vote every day on the issue next?) I have proposed instead this vote on Talk:Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom page:

That Wikipedia stop wasting time on endless revoting on this goddamned issue and ban votes on this issue from this page for at least six months.

Hopefully this will put this nonsense to bed for at least 6 months. Your (hopefully final) vote would be welcome. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 21:05, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Revert on Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/SimCentral[edit]

Sorry about that, I mainly saw something funny happen to one of my tags underneath to a scok/meat puppet and reverted it ([1]). I think I didn't visually process the addition of a comment too. An honest, if unfortunate, mistake. I have reverted my revert and repaired my tag manually. Thanks for alerting me (and for being nice about it). -Splash 07:18, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

On my way to class so I don't have time to deal with this properly, so I thought I'd alert you instead if you want to say anything. I suspect FatherSkeel of being a serial vandal also using sock puppets Hubris and Dogman1. --Dvyost 13:55, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed you have added a few picture from the RCN website. I guess it is wikipedia's policy to no longer allow images that are only for non-commercial use. According to the copyright info page the RCN images are only available for non-commercial use. I was just wondering if you did have permission to put them on wikipedia. If not they will have to be deleted, sadly. --129.173.105.28 18:24, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You are very likely correct about the Canadian naval images being delete-worthy. At the time I uploaded them, these policies did not apply, and I am quite upset that they apply now but that's an argument for another time. They're going to be pretty difficult, if not impossible, to replace with free images (although I live near Canada's Pacific naval base, so I might be able to track down, like, one). Still, I ain't running to a sysop telling them to speedy them all, let's just say. I completely agree with you; I wish Wikipedia would allow not for profit material. I'm in no rush to tag existing images, I was hoping by some stroke of luck someone had received authority. --129.173.105.28 19:00, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bloggerhell[edit]

Well, it's happened. We ended up with the one absolutely unacceptable result: one of them got deleted (Blogging Tories) and the other one got kept (Progressive Bloggers). What would you propose that we do to resolve this, since it constitutes "bias by inclusion" to treat them differently from each other? Bearcat 19:15, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'd ask that you have a look at Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_deletion/Blogging_Tories#Summarised_arguments and see what you think of my contribution. While I agree that it's unfortunate that these articles weren't treated equally, that is the way that it work sometimes. I've also put some thoughts at Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_deletion/Progressive Bloggers that make me feel that this did fall acceptably in the range of "no consensus", although it was very close.
I'd hate to see what I believe was the correct (if poorly annotated) deletion decision overturned.

Without these two the Edmonton Oilers hopes for the stanley cup would be downed. What now?? Max.pwnage 19:59, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Team Canada[edit]

What do you all think of the Canadian National hockey team's performance this year. Who knows what in the Olympics and 4th in the recent World Hockey Championship. What is the Problem? For the WHC i believe the problem is the Edmonton Oilers are still in the playoffs making all of the Canadian players off of the Oilers roster uneligible to play. What is going on here? Is Canada being surpassed by all other countries in the sport of hockey?Max.pwnage 02:49, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Favorite Songs[edit]

My survey has changed. I am now continuing my mission for the best songs, but now I am accepting all genres. I'm giving you a chance to revote for your top ten favorite songs of any genres (not just classic rock which is still the best). I've made a executive decision to keep the existing survey results and just add on to that with the new entries. My feeling for doing this is because classic rock is the most influential genre in music currently so it should be expressed more in the survey. Thank you for contributing in the past, and hopefully in the future. ROCK ON. RENTASTRAWBERRY FOR LET? röck 03:23, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
