I just noticed information from previous versions--deleted by accident?

  • does Margolyes hold an OBE?
  • did she do voice over work on Mulan?

According to IMDB, she does hold an OBE and she work on Mulan (as the voice of "Matchmaker")

Blackadder role[edit]

In Blackadder (the second series) she didn't play a Spanish Infanta, but Blackadder's puritan aunt Lady Whiteadder. They went to see Blackadder in order to talk of his inheritance. They would only eat turnip and drink water. In one quote when offered a chair she declared, "You have chairs? Wicked child, chairs are an invention of Satan. In our house Nathanial (her husband) sits on a spike. I sit on Nathanial: two spikes would be an Extravagance."

Removal of 'Sexy Sonia: Leaves from My School Girl Notebook '[edit]

The following was included in her Filmography:

This could very well be genuine but I can't find a refrence to this film in Google and it's not on Wikipedia. We also don't know the year? I've removed it but if someone could provide a source then it will be reincluded. Rating[edit]

I've rated this article as a C class for the LGBT project, nearly at B. Seems to cover the important points, and it well organised. Needs to fill in some of the gaps in citations. The discussion of her work seems to be a little random (or recentism?) - are they her "best" roles? "most aclaimed" "most famous"? Some quotes or cites from critics might clear it up. Is the OBE true? I couldn't see it in the article (was for services to arts? charity?. does she have an interaction with the gay community (publications, charities, views, fans?)Yobmod (talk) 08:27, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cadbury’s Caramel Rabbit[edit]

The article vaguely says in the middle of credits for the 1990’s that “around this time” she voiced the Caramel Rabbit; she may have done, but that misses the fact that she’s played the role since the Eighties (according to the Wikipedia article on the chocolate bar),and a YouTube search found an advert with her voice from 1980. Drug smugglers[edit]

Nationality[edit]

From WP:CONTEXTBIO: "The opening paragraph should usually provide context for the activities that made the person notable. In most modern-day cases this will be the country of which the person is a citizen, national or permanent resident". Margolyes is a citizen and part-time resident in Australia so "Australia" should be included in her nationality. Any thoughts? Burrobert (talk) 12:41, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Monkey[edit]

Where is the evidence of her doing 'most of the supporting female roles in Monkey?' I live in Australia and never heard her voice - so what did she do? Indeed that claim (along with "She also worked with the theatre company Gay Sweatshop and provided voiceovers in the Japanese TV series The Water Margin (credited as Mirium Margolyes")) has no supporting source(s). I see she is listed at the Monkey (TV series) article as one the UK dub actors, but again with no source(s). Unless it can be sourced here it should be removed, or at least tagged as unsourced. Nationality redux[edit]

What is her nationality and why are so many edits to her bio related to this issue? As mentioned in one of my edits, policy says to use the word "and" in the case of dual citizenship. See the Arnold Schwarzenegger example under "Nationality examples" at Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Biography#Context. The question then is what are the two parts that should be joined by "and". Here is a footnote from the policy mentioned above:
There is no categorical preference between describing a person as British rather than as English, Scottish, or Welsh. Decisions on which label to use should be determined through discussions and consensus. The label must not be changed arbitrarily. To come to a consensus, editors should consider how reliable sources refer to the subject, particularly UK reliable sources, and whether the subject has a preferred nationality by which they identify. My issue is with mixing ethnic identity (English) and nationality in the same sentence, hence my restructuring of the sentence for clarification. She only took on Australian citizenship late in life and has only been a part-time resident, and it can hardly be described as part of her identity. Very little of her career has been in Australia either, unlike the examples given such as Schwarzenegger or Lorre. I can't comment on the notion of "ethnic identity" as it applies to the British Isles. The except from policy above seems to treat "English" as a nationality. I consider that the description should either be "English and Australian" or "British and Australian" depending on how reliable sources describe her. Either one is fine with me. Her connection to Australia over around 30 years is fairly clear from her film, television and stage appearances. The BLP noticeboard may be a good place at which to ask for more opinions. Or perhaps "national identity" is a better term, considering that there are so many ethnicities within each. English is not a nationality in the sense that there is no English citizenship. The UK is the political entity that issues passports, etc.; however, many English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish people identify strongly with their national identity as such.
I'm not seeing much Australian in her filmography, and most British/English people would hardly be aware of her Australian citizenship, as in this recent Vogue article and here. In this 2020 article she says "We are very keen to come to Australia. But I don’t know if I would actually fully emigrate...". Her partner is Australian but lives in Amsterdam. Upon receiving citizenship here, "she said she had been visiting Down Under for decades and had always loved the place".
However, I'm happy to defer to majority opinion re interpretation of these wiki guidelines, so by all means ask at the BLP noticeboard. We also need to consider note a) on that page. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 08:57, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
