RFA[edit]

No problems. I think you'll make a great admin, sooner rather than later. I only opposed because I think you're still learning and, it seems to me, still tend to judge the importance of articles on your own familiarity with the subject. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 10:22, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

I came here to say the same thing, pretty much. I often find that you've done just what I've have done, it's just the itchiness of your deletion trigger-finger that had me worried. I'd be surprised if you weren't an admin in a month or so, and be as much an asset in that rôle as you are as a non-admin editor. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:37, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
Sorry about the failure of your self-nomination. I think that the self-nomination is inherently more difficult than nomination by another person. Better luck next time; I still have faith in you. Good day. --Merovingian (t) (c) 12:26, May 3, 2005 (UTC)
To quote Mel Etitis, I came here to say the same thing, pretty much. The good thing about failing an RFA is it does give you the opportubnity to assess any perceived weaknesses; use those oppose votes to help you correct any problems. I still think you'll make a good admin at some stage...leave it a couple of months and see whether you feel like testing the waters again. Grutness|hello? 12:43, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
  • Hear, hear. When you do (notice I didn't say "if"), you have my support. - Lucky 6.9 17:46, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
I don't think my late vote would have made any difference anyway, and I'm sorry I didn't pipe in earlier. Anyway, you will have my support the next time you run, provided (of course) that you don't go loopy on us before then. Kelly Martin 20:31, May 3, 2005 (UTC)
  • Eh, I think I supported you - but either way, I'd be happy to support you (again, if I did before... can't you tell I'm lazy?) next time you run, and surely you'd become one of our WikiJanitors(c), unless you started listing featured articles on VfD or something... ahem. :) — ugen64 22:53, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

VFD[edit]

Follow up from VFD on Colin Angus Mackay's talk page

Thanks - It looked like the heading in the main VFD page was messed up and there was no way to get to it from the TOC at the top of the page. If it was just a database lag then I'll have to remember that for the future - This was the first time I actually nominated anything for deletion. --Colin Angus Mackay 09:58, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

Management Quantative Analysis[edit]

Could anyone please explain why it is better for society to have the market, and not governments, determine prices of the goods we buy. If the government was running the market, how would you see marketing of goods and services differ than if society has the market?

Thanks, Sugar1 2May.05

It might be more appropriate to post this question at Wikipedia:Reference desk since I am not an expert in that subject. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 17:31, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

Sockpuppets and Blockage[edit]

I would love to grab up every possible combo of Wikipedia is Anarchism, but this might further trigger the ire of the vigilante known as User:BrokenSegue. He forced me to AOL by blocking my regular IP. Rickyrab | Talk 04:59, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

I did try to grab up the other combos of User:Wikipedia is Anarchism, only to be blocked at User:Wikipedians are Anarchists. Oh well. Rickyrab | Talk 05:15, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Here's what User:Curps, the blocker of Wikipedians are Anarchists, said about his blockage of that last username:

OK. I'm not sure the strategy of grabbing every variant will work, though, because there's always one more variant (add an exclamation point or two or three or four, vary the capitalization, etc.) -- Curps 05:22, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Impersonations[edit]

You admins really get my goat. And the proper term is "impostor" not "impersonation". I saw an impersonation walking in front of me! doesn't sound right, does it? ClockworkSoul 13:57, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

You don't have to revert my personal messages. They don't count as vandalism or trolling. ClockworkSoul 13:59, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
Excuse me, that was a very legitimate sentence I posted up there. And true, to tell the truth. Put it back or I will! ClockworkSoul 14:07, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
Yes, yes, everybody can tell that. Stressing the obvious is something you're good at, ain't it? ClockworkSoul 14:45, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

What?! I don't know what you're talking about, but my edit in Pope Benedict is legitimate. I saw that phrase this morning while reading TIME, I saw it last week on cnn.com, and I found it on one of his transcribed speechs on vatican.va. How can you say this is illegit? It may have been an impostor who ddi it, but will you revert all his edits even the good ones just because hes an impostor? That is purely illogical. I'm putting it back right now and you do all your editing and stuff but don't take it down. What note are you talking about? Temporary 15:22, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
Note that User:Temporary is just ClockwordSouI back and avoiding the block.--Silversmith 15:27, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
Um, no, the quote ("I guess he didn't listen to me") is a farce. It's not real. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 15:24, May 6, 2005 (UTC)
Any search on Google for the words "He didn't listen to me" + Benedict will turn up a surprisingly large number of "farce" quotations of Ratzinger saying this after his election. Temporary 15:49, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Double Redirects[edit]

Thanks. I must be going crazy; I forgot the title of First Past the Post electoral system ended in "electoral system" for some reason.

BTW, I think double redirects should work (but, probably, from the UA's PoV, they should only redirect once), because they make logical, semantic sense edit-side (for the future) in some cases where you actually have a target-most-side redirect going between potentially slightly different concepts—not in this case; obviously, we don't want circular ones though, and there probably has to be some limit.

--Joe Llywelyn Griffith Blakesley talk contrib 12:35, 2005 May 7 (UTC)

Continuing the aside, that is why I was proposing that double redirects look like single redirects public-side (except when one edits them), or, at least, don't actually redirect twice; then there shouldn't be a strain on the server.
--Joe Llywelyn Griffith Blakesley talk contrib 12:45, 2005 May 7 (UTC)

Disco Dog featuring Charlie[edit]

Would many people think of a cartoon series that exists on Google or others? Well, I think you said it does not exist.

See the talk page at Disco Dog featuring Charlie for this.

4.1xx.xxx.xxx 11:34 A.M.

  • First of all, there is no point in hiding your IP address since it is automatically listed in the page history [4]. Secondly, none of the articles listed on Talk:Disco Dog featuring Charlie currently mention Disco Dog or the show. Finally and most importantly, you have never cited credible third party sources to back up your claims. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 16:46, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

Pup Named Scooby Doo is close enough to the "bogus" cartoon series, but PNSD is a 1988-1991 cartoon series for about four years, but in only the last eposides, they just suddenly dropped music groups, but then it was gone. 4.1xx.xxx.xxx 11:00 PM

  • I don't see how it is going to do you any good to keep posting messages on my talk page. Once I put it on VFD, and three other users voted to delete the article, it is now out of my hands and in the hands of the administrators of this site. What do you hope to accomplish by only communicating with me directly??? If you think I am an admin, you are wrong -- I am not one yet. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 05:13, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

"Impersonater Vandal"[edit]

If this is the vandal who keeps impersonating everybody, I think a more catchy name would be the "Doppelganger" or "Imitator." "Impersonator Vandal" is simply too boring. JM*Bell° 01:23, 8 May 2005 (UTC) (legit account; didn't want to logout and login anymore so I figured I'd post you under this name)

Let's ask if he'd like to rename it, shall we? Although there is no immediate need, a catchy name would surely benefit our cause. -JM*Bell° 01:28, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

Come back![edit]

You know...there are lots of useful things you can do on Wikipedia that don't entail the dramatics of people that bother you. I hope you decide to come back someday - you don't have to be involved in anything you don't want to, but you're a good editor, with useful knowledge. Kingturtle 07:00, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

  • I agree, wikipedia does have it's share of powertrippers and what not. But you shouldn't let other people's shortcomings get you down. I think you are an awesome person. If you had posted my usert talk page I would have voted for you.Klonimus 09:20, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
  • I recently started noticing what you are referring to on Wikipedia - the power trippers as ‘klonimus’ puts it and the very-unnecessary-delays in resolving issues and the unnecessary edits to expanded topics. I personally feel that any topic that contains sufficient and detailed amount of information should no longer be open for editing except for updates, in order to minimize the mercilessly edits – at what point do we classify a topic as complete? I hope you decide to return to Wikipedia and see your great contributions again. --NEWUSER 16:53, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

Good to have you back[edit]

Welcome back Zzyzx11! I read through the post you made on your page regarding your new approach to dealing with Wikipedia and I think it’s fair, since you are setting up a guideline, it should help keep your stress level way down (or for your sake, hope it will). I did not get a chance to reply before, as I lost my password and I can’t seem to be able to recall it or find a developer to help me! So this post is made from my office. Just wanted to add my own "welcome back" as well. It's hard to find a balance between Wikipedia and real life. I've had to place restrictions on my own editing time as well, and I think I want to move away from policy discussions and such and more back to direct article improvement. — Knowledge Seeker 04:41, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Little help[edit]

Hi, I noticed you labelled an image I uploaded questioning the "information on its source" or something to that effect. I created the image (Bulkley Valley-Stikine 2001.png) using a shapefile freely available here and data freely available here (pdf). I used ESRI ArcExplorer 2.0 to insert the data into the base map. So I don't think there is a licensing problem, but for future reference, how do I indicate this when I upload? maclean25 07:01, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Palpatine -- again.[edit]

  • Important: Recently, someone removed information from the Palpatine article.

The person responsible noted that "this is not an article on hitler, not is it an article comparing the two, this is an article on palpatine please stick to Star Wars material."

Someone then restored it and again it was removed from the article. This is a situation I believe requires discussion.

Because of this, I have listed this issue on Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Article content disputes.

Thought you should know. Robeykr 05:20, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

HOW TO WIKIFY?[edit]

Dear Zzyzx11: I noticed you reinserted the Wikify warning on the one article I have ever contributed to this immense and notable project. So I must Wikify it. Would you please guide me on this endeavor? In spite of being a 36-year-long-career proffesional, I find the instructions on how to "Wikify" fairly scattered and unfathomable. Besides, I cannot see WHY and article that is well-composed, having all needed character formats, HAS to be "further "Wikified", that is, HTML-processed. Thank you.

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 23:03, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for voting on my RFA. Have some pie! I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer number of supporters (including several people that usually disagree with my opinion). I shall do my best with the proverbial mop. Yours, Radiant_>|< 07:57, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)

Per your request -- the Star Wars Wiki[edit]

Last month you wrote on my talk page:

  • Thank you for stopping the merge war. In the meantime, could you do me a favor? I recently spotted an anonymous user trying to unilaterally change Template:Swwiki to read "This article should be considered as a candidate to be copied to the Star Wars Wiki and then deleted." I persuaded this user to revert it back until there was a formal discussion on the change. So if you are familar and/or contribute to the Star Wars Wiki, could you please make a comment on that template's talk page. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:11, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

First -- Let me apologize for the long delay. The past month has been VERY hecktic for me:

  1. I was hospitalized for the better part of a week because the doctors thought I was having a heart-attack [NOT],
  2. I spent the whole entire week after that (when you posted the message) in up-state New York on work-related business,
  3. My Union had me on a picket line last week protesting our section's planned elimination (no, we can not go on strike),
  4. I was hospitalized again after I woke up Monday with severe chest pain, fearing the worst -- nope, ticker is fine;
  5. My family has just suffered the unexpected death of one of our pet dogs.

So please understand -- I have had my hands full.

When I checked the site I found:

Welcome to the Star Wars Wiki, a Star Wars database that anyone can edit.

In this wiki, started on March 4, 2005, we are currently working on 6,817,655 articles.

This is a coordinated effort among Wikipedians to provide more detailed Star Wars content. While Wikipedia is for more general, encyclopedic knowledge, the Star Wars Wiki is for Star Wars fans who wish to learn/provide more about the Star Wars Universe.

This database contains a plethora of spoilers for all released material relating to the Star Wars universe. Read at your own risk.

Enjoy!

Enjoy? You have got to be joking. I was completely flabbergasted by this site. It is F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!

This site is more comprehensive than the official site!

WOW!

As I looked through it, I was dumbfounded by all the effort you and I and all the rest have gone though creating and editing all those Star Wars related aricles on the other site. The Star Wars Wiki makes them all redundant. I am asking myself why I even bothered with those other edits – including the ones you became involved in.

If you still want my opinion – here it is.

All of the Star Wars related articles should be either deleted outright or redirected to the Star Wars Wiki. WIKIPEDIA should contain only a single article pertaining to The Star Wars Saga. WIKIPEDIA is primarily intended to be a broad based and general encyclopedia. I’ve done some checking in other encyclopedia sites as well as my own WORLD BOOK and I have found the either list one article about the saga or nothing at all.

Given the fact that Star Wars is an extensive and specific fictional universe, I believe – all things considered – that the suggestion that was put to you is sound. By maintaining the duplicate itemized data on both the general and specialized sites we are wasting storage space, time, and user effort. Moving the data off of the WIKIPEDIA would seem to be the most efficient and prudent course of action.

If you are an administrator – discuss this with your fellows.

If not – forward the matter to the administrators.

Regards;

Hello? Anybody there? You asked me a question and I gave you my answer. How about at least an acknowledgement? -- Jason Palpatine 06:02, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

flag is not PD-flag[edit]

You suggested that {{flag}} be aliased to {{PD-flag}}. [5] Such aliasing would not clarify whether the mis-user intended to declare that the copyright was PD, as the user may have intended something else. If an uploader does not properly specify a license, it has to be treated as not having a declared license. I'm not a fan of the flag name, but its incantation in the context of file uploads can't be reinterpreted, due to the legal context of the reference. (SEWilco 06:54, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC))

Jar Jar Binks[edit]

Jar Jar Binks is a six-foot-five-inch (1.96-metre) tall Moron... I'm not sure the article wasn't more accurate before you rolled it back. :-) Joyous 05:54, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

Jar Jar Binks is a six-foot-five-inch (1.96-metre) tall talking, feeling, walking, running, falling, fainting bundle of amphibious comic relief. There have been many debates about him; both pro and con. Considering the darkness of episode 3, the lightheartedness in episode 1 could be a compensating factor.

Jar Jar served a purpose in the story – he was the link that bought everything together.

Follow the chain –

  • If he had not been exiled from Otoh Gunga, Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi would not have met him.
  • If Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi had not met him, they would not have gone to Otoh Gunga to ask for help from Boss Nass.
  • If they had not asked for help from Boss Nass, they would not have been given the transport they needed to get to the Naboo capitol.
  • If they had not gotten to the Naboo capitol, they would not have been able to free the Queen and help her get off the planet.
  • If they had not gotten the Queen off the planet they would not have gone to Tantooine.
  • If they had not gone to Tantooine, they would not have encountered and aquired Anakin.
  • If they had not encountered and aquired Anakin, they would never have made it to Couruscant.
  • If they had not made it to Couruscant,
    • Anakin would not have been brought to the attention of the Jedi Council;
    • the Jedi Council would not know about Darth Maul;
    • Valorum would not have been removed from office;
    • Palpatine would not have become Chancelor; and
    • Queen Amidala would not have learned from Jar Jar about the Gungan Grand Army prompting her decision to return to Naboo.
  • If Queen Amidala had not return to Naboo from Coruscant, she would not have been able to form the friendship/alliance with the Gungans
  • If Queen Amidala had not formed the friendship/alliance with the Gungans, the Trade Federation forces would not have been repeled from Naboo.

And all for want of a fool.

Jar Jar was naive – this was meant to represent the child in all of us. There are many examples of such characters in fiction – the most notable, perhaps, being Bilbo Bagins. His naivety was a necessary element of his character. Years later, Jar Jar would propose the motion granting emergency powers to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine -- a move that would have profound impact on the Galactic Republic.

His naivety would cost the gataxy much -- Robeykr 05:29, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Mezmerize[edit]

I blocked both Mike Garcia (talk · contributions) and 66.36.138.207 (talk · contributions) for violating the three revert rule on Mezmerize (history · watch). The dispute was over what source to use to fill out the Billboard Music Charts table. Mike Garcia wanted to use the information from Allmusic.com while 66.36.138.207 wanted to use the data from billboard.com. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 15:11, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Template:Defunct NFL teams[edit]

Can you please explain to me why you feel this should be deleted. I also wished you had notifey me since I created the page. When you decided to vfm this page.Smith03 16:29, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Gee that is nice of you that if i reorganize the list you might reconsider not putting up for vfm. Look I don't mean to be a jerk about this but just because you don't find it useful, does not seem like a good reason to delete itSmith03 23:14, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I see it has now been deleted how long was it up for the vote?

So if one person bugs you, that give you the right to delete an article prior to the vfd being complete. I am sorry you are who again? Smith03 21:06, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC) Sorry if that sound mean, but User:Zzyzx11/Sandbox/Defunct NFL teams looks good had you offered to do this in the beginning or just redone the Template:Defunct NFL teams to look like this I would not have had a problem with it. My objection was to elimate a template just because ONE person thought it was not necessary plus not discussing it with person who had created it in the first place.Smith03 21:15, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC) sorry too no hard feelingsSmith03 21:26, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Deletion criteria[edit]

Deletion of templates may be appropriate if the template does not conform to the following.

  • Templates should be helpful and noteworthy;
  • Templated should not be redundant;
  • Templates should be used;
  • Templates should not be POV;
  • Templates should not generally be used within other templates - see Wikipedia:Avoid using meta-templates.

If you want a template changed or reworded, or its layout changed, please discuss that on the template's talk page rather than listing it for deletion here.

A lot of this is very opinion driven I believe my template was helpful, useful was not pov and I don't belive reduntantSmith03 21:15, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for protecting my user page[edit]

I tried to put the thanks on my talk page, but the same vandal kept reverting that too. Several other kind editors then reverted to the pre-thanks version (with best of intentions, I know, it's hard to grab the right version under a vandalism attack). Blocking (creating a heading I should have added before)[edit]

Hey, weren't you a bit hard on that silly person? This is what I had typed:

"Welcome to Wikipedia!

"Now that you've seen that you can edit Wikipedia but that senseless contributions will not last long, please consider making some useful contributions. Maybe your home town needs more written about it, for example.

"Kind regards from the South Pacific Ocean region. Robin Patterson 22:15, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)"

  • I'm not sure which silly person you are talking about. There's been a lot of them coming out of the woodwork lately like this one. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 22:21, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sorry for not making it anything like clear. I see you HAVE had a flood of them lately. (I see them only about once a day when I glance at the Recent Changes.) I was referring to the person with a name like "Block me..." whom you had indefinitely blocked about 10 minutes before I wrote my note (and just before I discovered that my response (understandably) produced an edit conflict). Then my PC refused to let me near your page, so I went back to working for my employer for a while.
Maybe you or some other sysop will unblock that person eventually... I must get back to my primary wiki responsibility, mi.wikipedia.org. Kind regards. Robin Patterson 01:11, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

2005 pro bowl[edit]

Hi - Thanks for adding the scoring summary. FYI - this is a joint project I'm undertaking with User:FutureNJGov, who was the originator of the pro bowl by year categories that were recently deleted. I can't (and don't particular want to) stop you from joining in, but please read this and take a look at his talk page. I notice your vote on the categories was delete - I hope he doesn't hold it against you (he might). I really hope we can avoid losing him. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:46, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

Heya, normally I'd agree with you on the non-speediness of Tennis related movies, however have a look at the creator's contribs, talk page and knowledge of templates. This is obviously a vandal trying to create lots of work. --W(t) 17:47, 2005 Jun 13 (UTC)

Electoral roll[edit]

Hi, the creator of the original nonsense at the Electoral roll page continues to disrupt the page, first blanking the redirect, and now restoring the original content (which was deleted, per vfd). Can you protect the page and block the problem child? -- BD2412 talk 23:22, 2005 Jun 14 (UTC)

Peanuts Characters[edit]

Hello there, Zzyzx11! Thank you for telling me about the Peanuts characters! Although I disagree with your idea, I have learned not to argue with those older (most of the people here are adults, correct?) and more experinced [with this site] then I am, that and I don't know much about how the site works (alright, whoever it was who said I don't know how to use the "system," {I forget who it was}, I atmit it, but that doesn't mean you have to blame that on my age!). Anyway, I only made the movements because I find that it's important to empisize that characters such as 5 and Pemperment Patty have real first and last names, for they are not comonly used in the strip itself (and it's not just with these characters, either). Please forgive me, for the fact that all my writing has been reverted as given me anger and my eleven-year-old mind finds it hard to comprehend that nobody really agrees with what I say. However, I don't hold grudges (especially on those who I am very loosely assoseated with, such as yourself). I hope that you and I will become friends over time, as one of my friends (I'm looking at you, UstherSRG) often agravates me by putting his loyalty to order on this site over trying to aviod hurting my feelings by constantly reverting my edits and articals. Why I bet he's at my new artical right now, looking at the most painful way [to me] to revert the intire thing. --Wack'd About Wiki 21:33, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • P.S.: Sorry if I got a little off topic, that happens to me sometimes.
  • P.S.S.: I apoligize for all my misspellings, it isn't exactly my best subject...

Thank you, I appreateate someone here agreeing with me. --Wack'd About Wiki 21:50, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
