In Popular Culture[edit]

Edith Wharton published a novel in 1925 called A Mother's Recompense. She gives this acknowldgement regarding her re-use of the title: "My excuses are due to the decorous shade of Grace Aguilar, loved of our grandmothers, for deliberately appropriating, and applying to uses so different, the title of one of the most admired of her tales. Genealogy[edit]

Dugdale says "Grace's Grandfather, Joseph Aguilar (1765 - 17th December 1822) had married his first cousin Grace Aguilar (1764 - 28th February 1823) The generation of Aguilar's before this had owned sugar plantations in Jamaica, their forebears having fled Jewish persecution in Spain." There is no evidence that Joseph and Grace were first cousins and the generation before this is unknown. Kittybrewster ☎ 09:48, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

From the entry: "Her mother, a cultivated woman of strong religious feeling, trained her to read the Scriptures systematically...."
