Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Monoceros (SoA)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monoceros (SoA) was proposed for deletion. This page is an archive of the discussion about the proposed deletion. This page is no longer live. Further comments should be made on the article's talk page rather than here so that this page is preserved as an historic record. The result of the debate was to merge and redirect.

Although I vote for the deletion of this page due to the fictional-context of the material presented therein this raises the question of what to do with the apparently extensive amount of material elsewhere in the Wikipedia related to this topic - all of which is fictional and seemingly drawn from a book series. Could this be copyright infringement?

  • Another apparently lost/orphaned VfD nom, as the tag was added April 20, but there doesn't seem to be a vote page, and it's not on "old". Name by itself gets plenty of hits, but they're for the constellation. Monoceros nasrad gets 36 hits. Procedural nom/delete. Niteowlneils 21:23, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete: I feel strongly about this one. Many of the Salvatore novel entries are horribly named, many more don't indicate that they are fiction, and all of them are documenting single things in a series of novels. This AD&D-based novel series spins out huge numbers of items, and they're just too minor. Why every article and person and thing mentioned by R.A. Salvatore in his once-a-month novels, and not by an even less popular novelist, or an even less popular one, or a weekly 'zine? Consolidate the lot into a single page on the mythos of R.A. Salvatore. This page is duly pointed to by the page Skies of Arcadia. If we delete this page, we better delete Skies of Arcadia and all its daughter pages. There many be some point in merging all the short daughter pages of Skies of Arcadia into one page for the men, and one page for the ships. Anthony Appleyard 18:20, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Comment: That may well be the case. R. A. Salvatore writes these books at a pace that makes you wonder if he's a -bot, and the books themselves...well...this is not the place for literary reviews. The point is that a fan of his work came along some time ago (I think all these are at least 8 mo. old) and peppered us, a la our "Mr. Show" fan above, with dozens of very short articles, all written with great enthusiasm. Unlike our "Mr. Show" fan, though, the user seemed to be an IP who dropped junk and left. Many of these things were written as if they were real, as well. Any of these articles on ships, people, etc. can link to about a dozen books, so having them all link to Skies of Arcadia is somewhat misleading, in fact. I do not recommend a merge, myself, because I think this is the kind of detail that is very, very unnecessary and non-encyclopedic. That's why I would just say "delete" to the lot (though they need to come up one at a time). This is just another author with just another fictional mythos, and there is truly no end to such persons or such fictions. Geogre 20:24, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I wasn't aware that RA Salvatore was a Japanese video game designer. Surely one should actually read an article and have a vague idea of what it's about before voting to delete it, or deciding that one feels strongly about its deletion? Anyway, I'm going to try to merge all of this crap into one article, which shouldn't take long as most of the articles are stubs. -Sean Curtin 00:36, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)
And done: Skies of Arcadia characters and Skies of Arcadia things and events. -Sean Curtin 02:54, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)
Comment: Sean, see this and all previous iterations of it. The "Monoceros" is the flagship of Captain Ramirez in the novels of R.A. Salvatore, the various Sword Coast books. See also the previous VfD. Did it survive? Is this a survivor or one that just didn't get deleted? See who nominated it for VfD before, and you'll see why I didn't read the revision of 3 days ago. There's nothing on any version of this page or the pages that it links to that references R.A. Salvatore or the Forgotten Realms/Sword Coast setting, only to the Skies of Arcadia video game. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a ship called Monoceros that had a captain named Ramirez in Salvatore's novels, though Googling for 'Ramirez "Sword Coast"' gets no results, 'Ramirez "Forgotten Realms"' gets nothing relevant, and 'Ramirez monoceros' only gets hits related to the video game, narwhals, or astronomy. -Sean Curtin 05:35, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)
