Each house has a unique number in the district, from 1 to several thousand, generally numbered from one corner of the area to another, but not usually in a readily understandable manner.

Heh, there's an understatement.

Also, I don't think it's worth putting in this article, but if I remember correctly, in Castello there are some duplicate numbers in Sant'Elena... i.e., Sant'Elena uses its own addressing from 1 to whatever, non-SE Castello also has the 1 to whatever addresses, so there are two address 1's in Castello, one in Sant'Elena and one not. So, saying each address is "unique in the district" I don't think is correct. However, this is my recollection based on what one of my college professors, a native Venetian who lives part-time in Sant'Elena, told me once, so I'll leave it unless someone else can confirm it.
