I concede that WP:WEIGHT issues may ensue. But what distinction is there, really, between this page and "psychoanalysis"? FatalSubjectivities (talk) 12:56, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In theory, this article could focus on the theory of the mind, whereas PA could more at history and therapeutic interventions. Kind of like Bone vs Orthopedic surgery, or Black–Scholes model vs Option trading, or Structural engineering vs Construction.
There's almost certainly enough material and disagreement in all the worlds literature to justify an article on psychoanalytic theory separate from PA. As it stands I feel like Psychoanalysis contains more of what this page might be about than this page does.
I would probably want to keep things like Psychoanalytic literary criticism, Psychoanalytic sociology (e.g. Slavoj Žižek, Anti-Oedipus) out of PA (or perhaps mentioned in a couple of sentences with links) whereas these might have a fuller discussion here.
I'd point a pages like Psychology of self or Mind as an example of what this article might look like once fleshed out. Talpedia (talk) 04:55, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Strong oppose as per the above comments. Psychoanalysis is a synecdoche: it is both the overall field encompassing psychoanalytic theory, literary criticism, and sociology. It is also the practice of psychoanalysis in a psychiatric setting (free association, dream interpretation, &c.) and a text (a psychoanalysis of this, a psychoanalysis of that) -- as per Gill 1999, it is a theory, a research method, a therapy, a body of knowledge at once. Psychoanalysis undoubtedly exceeds psychoanalytic theory, especially since the former is deeply committed to clinical practice.--MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE IS REAL EMO!(talk or whatever) 09:31, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
psychoanalytic theory is a term belonging to the science of psychology while psychoanalysis is simply an opinion by Freud. psychoanalytic theory is a concrete theory used in the world of psychology and thus should receive its own page. 24.117.81.174 (talk) 19:58, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
STRONG AGREE, they are not even theories in the scientific sense. (psychoanalysis isn't scientific or psychology). --T0t0 Cugn0 (talk) 00:05, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What's your take on feminist theory, marxist theory, literature theory or sociological theory? I sort of view theory as "a thing that seeks to explain multiple facts". Talpedia 17:04, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Strong oppose as per the above comments. Don't overcomplicate for the first timers : ) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rubymza (talkcontribs) 21:08, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
