What nonsense. The man's name was Ion (Ίων). "Ionas" is a modern-day colloquial rendition. It's like calling Pericles "Perry" or Charlemagne "Chuck".

I agree with anonymous. Some ancient Greek words did have variant endings in the different dialects, (e.g. φύλαξ v. φύλακας), but Ionas is a pretty recient variation, like Spyros from Spyridon. I'm putting this up for a page move. --Jpbrenna 07:01, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
