Further comments should be made on the article's talk page rather than here so that this page is preserved as an historic record. The result of the debate was to keep.

No factual notable and encyclopaedic information. Concluded by a blatant advertisment. AtonX 22:41, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

  • Comment first, tripwire is opensource, not commercial, so 'blatant advertisement' seems a bit strong. second, it plainly does have factual information. that said, wikipedia is not freshmeat either. Wolfman 23:11, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • Agreed. Adjusted. :-) AtonX 23:24, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
      • Tripwire hasn't been open-source for years; it's a commercial product now, although the last open-source version is still available. (No vote.) mendel 16:41, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete: Product announcement, with no indication of notability. Perhaps we should wait for only the people who use it and love it and write blogs about it to vote? Nah. Geogre 23:55, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • The new last paragraph, in particular, helps seal the deal for a keep. Always happy to get to change a vote. Geogre 03:26, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Comment: How notable is this? The article is less than a day old, and the first contribution from an anon. A search on Tripwire software gets over 200,000 Google hits. No vote for now. Andrewa 00:25, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • It's been around a while. I remember using it several years ago. I think it came standard with my Linux distribution. So, I do think it is widely used. That doesn't necessarily make it encyclopedia material though. Wolfman 01:23, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Comment: Glad to see people who have more information to offer than the author felt moved to do. Just for whatever it's worth, I'm inclined to personally say that a "first" or a "best" or a "most popular" is notable, but in the case of things like computer programs anything that is no longer the most popular or best really needs to have some serious claims for trailblazing to be a separate article. • I am abstaining for now, but last time I checked, Tripwire was a very notable program in the area of intrusion detection tools. I believe it may have been superseded by other tools, but for a decent amount of time, it was best-of-breed in its category. Perhaps the information would be more at home under "intrusion detection tools" or something similar, though. -- Antaeus Feldspar 03:15, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep but cleanup. siroχo 03:51, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)
  • Weak Keep. This software is quite notable when it comes to security tools. I'm not sure if that category should be covered by Wikipedia, but will err on the safe side. --Improv 16:42, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. I just reworded it, cross referenced it to IDS/HIDS/NIDS and added a HIDS entry. tripwire is a popular opensource HIDS. it is to HIDS what snort is to NIDS - IMHO. It has also contributed many new security techniques to the industry in the past 12 years (or more) and is highly regarded. No, I do not have any commercial affiliation with tripwire.com - its just a damn good open-source tool and deserves a mention - if nothing else than for its historical significance to computer security. yes, I'm a newbie - sorry if I treaded on toes. didn't mean to... tom 01:32, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. I was prepared to vote delete prior to tom's edit. The new article is a significant improvement and establishes notability. Deletionist 01:47, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. DCEdwards1966 04:00, Nov 20, 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep it. [[User:Radman1|RaD Man (talk)]] 16:31, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. Very notable in its field. jni 08:43, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. For reasons stated by others that vote keep. --Dittaeva 20:44, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)
