Unspecified source for Image:CANDU at Qinshan.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:CANDU at Qinshan.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:24, 12 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. feydey 17:24, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Public domain" images for publication purposes[edit]

Hi. Please note that publication purposes is not the same as public domain! And another question, did you take those images yourself, as you tagged them? Bryan 22:18, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Listed them here Bryan 22:23, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Image:CANDU fuel bundles.jpg, Image:CANDU fuel cycles.jpg, and Image:CANDU at Qinshan.jpg relicensed using the Attribution tag. All three images were created by Atomic Energy of Canada; hence the confusion of authorship since I represent that company. Whitlock 22:36, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Jeremy Whitlock, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.. Please also ensure that any information that you add to articles is verifiable through the use of reliable sources. --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 17:21, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

??? The original article isn't reliably referenced. I tried to improve the content. Whatever.
Whitlock (talk) 05:27, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not quote sure what you mean by "isn't reliably referenced" - the article currently contains three references, two from the CBC and one from the Globe and Mail. The content that you added contained no references, and, due to your username and obvious knowledge of the subject, appears to be original research. Please note that the COI information that I provided to you above does not state that you cannot contribute to articles in which you are involved, simply that you need to be careful in the way the information is added. I would be happy to discuss the changes you would like to make to that article on the talk page and help edit the article with additional information as long as the new material is verifiable and referenced. Regards, --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 15:47, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I meant "reliably referenced" in the conventional sense, not the Wikipedia expedient. Mainstream daily media should certainly not be considered a reliable source (and in any case the first of those links is broken).
Would either of these sources be considered acceptable for the information I added?

Whitlock (talk) 20:51, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The links you provided aren't ideal sources as I'm assuming there is an affiliation between the individual and the publishing party; however if the information is presented in a neutral manner and contains no contentious claims, then they can be included. "Mainstream media" sources are, with regard to Wikipedia's policy on verifiability and neutrality, many times considered the best and most reliable sources. There is a wealth of information available here that you can use to help determine if a source is reliable. You can always leave a note on the article talk page or ping me on my talk page if you're unsure. Happy editing! --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 16:16, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As I alluded to above, Wikipedia's policy on verifiability and neutrality is not a stringent enough test of reliability and accuracy, and from my experience I would caution against ever treating mainstream media as a reliable source, particularly in the sense of an encylopedia reference which Wikipedia aspires to be. This is one of several reasons why I advise students and teachers not to accept Wikipedia as an appropriate research reference. Whitlock (talk) 12:14, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Our policies on referencing and verifiability have all been reached through consensus and discussion. If you believe overall changes need to be made and want to try to form a new consensus, the village pump is a great venue for sharing opinions and ideas. On a case by case basis, the reliable sources noticeboard is a specialized venue where specific sources can be reviewed to determine if they meet our standards. With regard to your comment on using Wikipedia as a research reference, you can see here that Wikipedia clearly states that it should not be used as a primary source. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 14:48, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Candu Energy Inc logo.gif)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Candu Energy Inc logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
