1894 – 3,000 employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company go on strike (pictured) to protest lowered wages without an equivalent reduction in expenses charged in the company town, Pullman, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago). See: Pullman strike
1898 – The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in England opens.
1936 – Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft's BR 05 class locomotive number 05 002 sets the world's speed record for steam locomotives at 200.4 km/h (124.5 mph) on a run between Hamburg and Berlin.
1997 – The New York and Atlantic Railway takes over freight operations of the Long Island Rail Road.
