The history of the province is unsure, the various sources which mention about it contradict themselves.

- originally Chaiya, Tha Thong, Kiri Raj administered by Nakhon Sri Thammarat
- Rama IV moved Tha Thong to Ban Don, Tha Thong renamed to Kanchanadit
- Monthon Chumpon was created out of Chaiya, Kanchanadit, Lang Suan, Chumpon.
- Monthon seat moved to Ban Don in 1915 and city renamed to Surat Thani

- Monthon created by provinces Chumpon, Surat Thani, Chaiya, Lang Suan
- Southern provinces under control of the Kalahorn ministry in 1889 don't list a province Bandon or Tha Thong, only Kanchanadit

[1]: Rama III moved Thathong (located at modern คลองท่าทองใหม่) to Kanchanadit, and give it the new name. BE 2441 Monthon Chumphon created. 2442 Chaiya and Kanchanadit merged to Mueang Chaiya. 2458 court (Monthon) moved from Chumphon to Bandon. Chaiya renamed อำเภอพุมเรียง, but name wasn't much accepted by population. July 29 2458 name Surat Thani was created after Surat in India. In August 2458 river Tapi got its new name after Tapi river at Surat, India. Province hall originally in ตำบลท่าข้าม, Amphoe Phunphin. Move to Bandon in WWII. At December 8 2484 Japanese capture Surat, province hall burn down. Rebuild till BE 2497. Bombing by rebel on March 19, 1982 and destroyed completely (5 casualties). Site is now Lak Mueang.

New King Amphoe?[edit]

While googleing for สาขาตำบลเกาะเต่า I came across this, which lists two additional King Amphoe with their geocode already, but without any Tambon.

20	กิ่งอำเภอท่าโรงช้าง	Tha Rong Chang	southwest of Phunphin district
21	กิ่งอำเภอบางสวรรค์	Bang Sawan	west of Prasaeng district

I guess these are planned new districts - can anyone give details? andy 11:10, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To add to the confusion, อำเภอท่าโรงช้าง was an old name of Amphoe Phunphin. andy 11:10, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
