Merge with History of Organizational Changes?[edit]

I think this page would serve better as a repository for keeping track of _all_ organizational changes in the NHL.

They key expansion I have in mind is to incorporate team name changes more explicitly as entries here.

In fact there's already almost complete overlap with this page: [1]

(the key difference being one's in expository format, this one is in table format).

I don't see the point of keeping the information stored separately, given the extensive overlap.

Why the Jets and Nord do not go on this page the teams still exist they moved Jets to Phoenix Nords to Colorado they are relocated not defunct Smith03 23:27, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)

This page is neither alphabetical nor chronological. Please make it one or the other. RickK 07:41, 25 Oct 2003 (UTC)

You could also include Hartford Whalers, Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Flames Etc.

Done, and done. I've rewritten this entire page, using [2] as a source. Should be cool now. - Scooter 21:20, 8 Jan 2004 (UTC)

St. Louis Eagles replaced Ottawa Senators. Many of the Senator players went to the Eagles (1934-35) Source: NHL Official Guide and Record Book and Encyclopedia of Hockey.

relocation and a name change doesn't equal defunct

no, defunct is when a team no longer operates at all anywhere, after a relocation and name change team history and records remain the same. For example, if a team ceases operations because of financial difficulty that would be considered defunct, but if moved it still exists just with different city and/or name

Changes to Map[edit]

It looks like all of the teams that have moved or folded are included on the map on the bottom of the page...except for the Minnesota North Stars. Is there a reason for this, or was it just an oversight? Etphonehome (talk) 08:20, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Seals[edit]

They went through 3 names. Along with California Golden Seals & Oakland Seals, they were the California Seals. GoodDay (talk) 16:03, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed image to accommodate this. I also include the Brooklyn Americans. --K.Annoyomous (talk) 19:02, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okie Dokie. GoodDay (talk) 19:03, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Winnipeg Jets[edit]

Perhaps the Winnipeg Jets label on the map can now be changed to Winnipeg Jets (original), to match how Ottawa is labelled. rkehler3 (talk) 17:03, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Atlanta Thrashers[edit]

The Thrashers haven't been moved to Winnipeg & won't be, until a 2/3 majority vote in that favour, by the NHL Board of Governors. GoodDay (talk) 20:52, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I believe that True North, the group attempting to buy the Thrashers, has a condition that a certain number of season tickets have to be purchased by Winnipeg residents before the sale closes. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 05:34, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Thrashers have now moved and there is a Wikipedia page for the as of yet, unnamed Winnipeg NHL Team. Semi-Lobster (talk) 19:58, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Again, the move is not official until the league meets to vote on June 21. The new page is a placeholder in the interim. (As for the tickets, I think that it was a "strong suggestion" as opposed to a legal condition.) --Ckatzchatspy 20:02, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing about the Winnipeg NHL team should be added on until league approval. They have not relocated...yet. --K.Annoyomous (talk) 20:20, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've restored the material. Simply put, it is referenced, non-speculative (as it clearly states the pending nature of the deal) and avoids repeated changes to the page. It was speculative up until Gary Bettman took the podium, but now is noteworthy here. --Ckatzchatspy 20:44, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
IMO, I believe that information about future relocations shouldn't be included in a list article listing the current defunct and relocated teams. That information should be included in Potential NHL expansion, not here. --K.Annoyomous (talk) 20:47, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The vote is only three weeks away; furthermore, I don't see how the move to Winnipeg fits under the heading of "expansion". --Ckatzchatspy 20:49, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Let's remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and it is not a crystal ball. Yes, it's probable that the NHL will approve the move. But, as with most purchase agreements, there are contingencies, some of which may fail to occur, killing the deal. Or the NHL, after investigating the True North management group, find out that they're funded by aliens from Alpha Centauri. That would be cool, but probably would kill the deal. We have seen deals fall apart before. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 23:13, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, hey, I agree with you about WP:CRYSTAL. It's not really much different from what we do with respect to TV shows and the number of episodes aired. That's why I think the current language - which outlines it as pending - is appropriate. It definitely shouldn't be written as a done deal, but similarly it should be acknowledged here as it is a reality (as opposed to the conjecture from even a few days ago). --Ckatzchatspy 01:37, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I know it's a little after the fact, but for those who aren't current on the subject, the purchase-relocation of the Thashers was approved by the league and the relocation has taken place. So as far as that is concerned, this section is no longer revelant. But I think it would be good for editors to read over this section so they are aware for the next NHL relocation. (Phoenix Coyotes 2012-13?). --rkehler3 (talk) 10:44, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

lockout gap and Ducks timeline[edit]

Any thoughts on the utility of the timeline graph (List of defunct and relocated National Hockey League teams#Timeline) using a white gap to denote the 2004-05 lockout/cancellation? The individual franchise office locations, non-playing staff, merchandising, and such continued throughout. So the franchise existed in those markets during the gap. The current treament opens a (tiny) unanswered question for the casual viewer if any teams relocated prior to the unplayed 2004-05 season and had to wait a year to play any games.

Also, the graph currently has "Mighty Ducks of Anaheim" ending in 2003-2004 (before the lockout white gap) and "Anaheim Ducks" beginning in 2005-06 (just after the gap). The Ducks rebranding was done prior to the 2006–07 season, so the visualization appears to be off by a year. I defer to actual subject matter experts to verify and determine if there are similar issues for other teams. UW Dawgs (talk) 02:31, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • No need to mention gap, as NHL continued to exist during 2004-05 lockout. GoodDay (talk) 13:59, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree with getting rid of the gap. Have never liked it. oknazevad (talk) 18:02, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree with others. For a season page, a gap makes sense. For a franchise timeline page, it does not. Resolute 22:46, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Detroit RedWings[edit]

The Victoria Cougars were moved to Detroit in 1926 by Lester Patrick. Please add to this site. 2001:569:6FF6:2459:D1A:2027:410A:9301 (talk) 01:35, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: They weren't "relocated" - Detroit received an expansion franchise, and purchased players from Victoria to stock that franchise. Echoedmyron (talk) 10:36, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Differentiate highlighting in first table column?[edit]

It might be worthwhile to differentiate "City would later receive a new franchise (now defunct)" from "City would later receive a new franchise (still active)". --Fru1tbat (talk) 14:15, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
