Thank you for your edits to Christianity in Japan. I always worry that the article does not have enough information, so I am glad for anything we can add to it. I wanted to let you know two things:

1.) I edited the grammar and the formatting of your recent edits to make it sound better in English and also to make it conform to the style guide. I would appreciate it if you could review my edit and make sure I understood your meaning correctly.

2.) I am the person that added the section about Christmas and other holidays, and the KFC was part of that. I am not sure if you saw it, but there was a source added one sentence later. It was intended to support both sentences, but I realized it might have been easy to miss. Now, I included another copy of the reference next to the KFC statement to avoid confusion. The reference used, in case you want to read it, is here: Christmas in Japan: From Mesopotamia to Colonel Sanders. It is actually an interesting story about how marketing campaigns resulted in two new customs, Christmas cakein 1910 and KFC in the 1970s. I have other references too, but I thought that was the most interesting.

I want to make sure my English is understood - I don't mean to say KFC is required to celebrate Christmas. No :) However, there are many activities people use for celebrating Christmas in Japan, and KFC is one of them. In America, nobody would use KFC to celebrate Christmas, so it is an interesting detail. It certainly was a strange experience for me to see it in Japan.

I was in Tokyo for a year and I was very surprised by Christmas cake and by KFC. I come from America, and KFC is American, but we do not have any KFC Christmas here. When I asked my friends in Japan why people bring KFC to Christmas parties, they were surprised... they thought it was an American custom. I'd never heard of eating KFC for Christmas. It seemed strange to me, but I saw people do it and they bring it to Japanese parties :O. In America, if I brought KFC to a Christmas party, people would look at me like I was from Mars. Maybe it's more of a Tokyo thing, I don't know... ?

Then I went to a Christmas party and my friends told me there was Christmas cake. I asked "what is Christmas cake?" They were shocked... "You're American," they said, "don't you eat Christmas cake?" I had never heard of Christmas cake either! It is not a custom in America, but it tastes very good, so maybe we should make it a custom! :D

Ok Phoenix, thanks for letting me know you have some doubts about the source. But next time, it would be better if you just removed the reference and put a {{fact}} tag on it instead. That allows other people to supplement with more references instead of just wholesale deletion; it's a little more polite and allows discussion and consensus to avoid risking an edit war. Hi guys, I don't have sources at hand (it's at my parents' in Tokyo) but could say:

• chickens in Christmas could be back to 1960s or earlier. My mother, married in late 1960s, had a cookbook published in 1960s and "roasted chicken" was one of recommendations to Christmas dinner.
• I guess it was back to the occupation period, from 1945 till 1955, like Christmas cake, but it is an assumption.
• I'm a Tokyo-born and raised Japanese and know the KFC campaign. Some might be influenced, but not all I think. You could say Japanese think chicken is a must for Christmas dinner, but the way to cook may vary from family to family. Some prefers roasted one, some prefer fried, kara-age or KFC. You can find it in Japanese recipe books ... many offers chicken for Christmas. In that situation focusing up KFC only is too much unbalanced in my opinion. --Aphaia (talk) 08:05, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

• Good info, thanks for the reply. Makes sense, very interesting... this makes me wonder if when my friends said KFC is traditional, they just say that because KFC is a kind of chicken? I guess that could explain what I read and hear in sources about there being a KFC tradition. I wonder if it is a kind of an accidental bias? People from countries that only do roasted chicken would immediately notice if people used KFC, but they might not notice if people eat roast chicken, since that seems "normal" to them. So the idea of a "KFC tradition" becomes born because people only talk about the part of the tradition that's new and interesting, and not the part everyone already knows about. I wonder if that's what happened? Maybe that's why I see Western news media talk about a KFC tradition in Japan all the time.
• So I guess the sentence could say "things like chicken and Christmas cake." Maybe it would be good to point out in the article that the chicken can be any style including fast food, since this is a surprise to many readers of Wikipedia. I'll keep digging for sources other than news clippings (hopefully...Google hates me today) but if you can find the sources at your mothers' place that would be great to have in the article. Thanks,

Thanks and good luck for your googling. Your reply reminds me another points we together missed before: oven or lack of oven at Japanese kitchen.

Japanese traditional kitchen had no oven. Now it is a familiar equipment as the microwave-oven set, but it was very rare in the mid 1970s' Japan. So in those days for most people roasted chicken might not be what they did, but rather what they bought: like Christmas cake. I guess it would be a horrible idea for Westerners the major parts of Christmas dinner is take out. But for Japanese, it looks not so much lazy. So KFC might find a possible market - sell theirs instead of roasted one ...

Kind of off-topic of me, but I was impressed by those wonderful microwave-ovens. Although, they are small. We decided to celebrate Thanksgiving American-style, and didn't have access to a professional kitchen. Of course we wanted turkey, so we used these microwave ovens to prepare it. It was nearly impossible to fit the turkey inside the machine, and took such a long time to prepare that we were afraid we would never make the dinner in time!
