How do we know which surname is most common in the world?[edit]

Can someone list a source for that first statement "Wang is the most common surname in the world".... ? How do we know it's the most common? Who says so? Spettro9 (talk) 16:38, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Because Wang is a fumnny name and desurvs an accolade —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.22.73.226 (talk) 12:02, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As the most common surname in the world's most populous country, which happens to have a culture with an incredibly small number of surnames to begin with, the claim seems highly likely to be correct. On the other hand, you're right to want a source that's actually crunched the numbers. — LlywelynII 13:05, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Romanization[edit]

What is a "Cantonese Romanization"? Did you mean latinisation? The translation into the latin alphabet?

I'm not that person, but obviously, yes. Romanization means tranliteration (not translation) into Latin letters. Eg. Wong, cheungsam, Hong Kong, and I believe Peking are all Cantonese romanizations. Spettro9 (talk) 16:35, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Surname pages[edit]

There is a proposal to create a precedent that names are not encyclopedic. Articles about names regularly show up on various deletion pages and are summarily deleted. Perhaps - since you've been working on an article about a name, you hold a different opinion that you'd like to express. Nomadic Wangs[edit]

Some Wang clans are descended from nomads who were given "wang" as surname by chinese emperors. 128.147.38.10 15:31, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The expansion of this page[edit]

I just deleted the info on how many per cent of famous Chinese have the surname Wang, I don't think we should burden this article with this kind of trivia, which obviously come from the almost completely unsourced article in Chinese Wikipedia. What is the next step, adding info on blood groups?--Niohe 22:07, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing wrong with % or blood groups, except that "famous Chinese" is automatically a nebulous and unuseful concept. — LlywelynII 13:16, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding beyond Far East Asia[edit]

I was wondering how this article should be expanded, since Wang, with the variation form Vang both pronounced in X-SAMPA /vaNk/, is a surname used in the Faroe Islands, but its origin is Denmark. I don't know if there are really any people famous enough for a Wikipedia article, but one example could be Faroese runner Sam Vang. But in any case, I feel like it's worth mentioning, that this surname exists here too, I'm just not sure how to do it. Mulder1982 (talk) 22:02, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But Vang is Vang, worth mentioning at Vang. — LlywelynII 13:16, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Second Most Common?[edit]

I believe Wang ranks second to Li in China, and the whole world. Facial (talk) 23:46, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You'd be wrong. There have been various surveys that rank the top three (王, 李, and 张) and in fact our page on list of common Chinese surnames uses one, but the NCIIC actually counted up the whole country and it's Wang. — LlywelynII 13:13, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Block of untranslated Chinese text[edit]

Moved here from the main page, until someone feels like translating it. < ! - - Commented out - - > below:

(Btw, if that's just the Zh.wiki's article on the Wangs, we don't even need to keep it here. There's a link on the page already.) — LlywelynII 13:48, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Move to Wang (王)?[edit]

Leaving it here, you've got to deal with 汪 and other surnames as well, while this material currently seems pretty 王centric. — LlywelynII 13:18, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A little better after some cleanup.
Also, on second thought, Li (李) has created a pretty ugly mess. It works well enough to divide the page according to the pinyin Wáng (surname) and Wāng (surname) if it comes to that. — LlywelynII 18:12, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

External links[edit]

The People's Daily article is ok, but already included in the references (where it should be anyway). The other doesn't seem terribly encyclopedic, but will leave it here for those who want to mine it for content: Chinawang.org. — LlywelynII 18:12, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
