Married before he was born?

[edit]

According to the this article, Otis Ray Bowen was born in 1918, but somehow managed to get married in 1915, three years before he was born. I cannot find a correct date. Could somebody please correct that? --TommyBoy 20:15, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Nearly goofed here... Otis's father Vernie married Pearl in 1915; Otis married Elizabeth in 1939. I corrected (well, re-corrected after my goof) the text to clarify that the first part of Early Life is talking about his parents. --Tysto 22:25, 2005 Jun 1 (UTC)

Rename

[edit]

Bowen is from my home town, and a number of things are named after him. All of them are "Otis R. Bowen." I never even knew his middle name until looking at this article. I suggest the article be renamed Otis R. Bowen but that we retain the "Otis Ray Bowen" opening. This seems to be the model for other bios. --Tysto 22:14, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In response to Tysto's suggestion, I have formally proposed this article for renaming. --TommyBoy 23:02, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, since it would not be considered controversial, I will go ahead and move the page --TommyBoy 23:05, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Presidential candidate

[edit]

I also lived in Bremen when "Doc" was practicing. He was our family and school physician. My father, Daniel H. Bollinger, Jr. (deceased) was his campaign manager when he ran for State Legislator. Later, my father was invited to nominate Gov. Dr. Otis R. Bowen for Republican candidate for President, I forget what term, I'm guessing the 1984 election. I don't see any mention of Doc's biography. It would be interesting to add. I might have a copy of the nomination letter in my father's belongings. Dan Bollinger (talk) 17:58, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you could find a relable source which verifies his 1984 presidential candidacy, I urge you to be bold and add the information. --TommyBoy (talk) 04:08, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I still intend to look for this letter, which might be in his effects we saved. What surprised me is that I could find no list of presidential candidates for any year. You'd think they'd be a matter of public record.Dan Bollinger (talk) 15:06, 14 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
While conducting further research on the dormant question of Bowen's possible presidential candidacy, I have determined that it is unlikely that he would have been a presidential candidate in the 1984 election since Ronald Reagan won the Republican nomination with only token opposition before going on to win a lanslide victory in the general election that year, nor could I find any information regarding his possible candidacy in any other presidential election year in which he was active or semi-active in statewide and national politics and could have been a viable candidate (1976, 1980, 1988, 1992, and 1996). --TommyBoy (talk) 01:01, 27 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
