Newcomer task[edit]

It appears that the “so called” Newcomer task is already a disaster in progress. Despite being a regular editor I had not heard of it until 17 May 2024, when I noticed a piece of text in Highway 1 (Queensland) had been removed and replaced with identical text, and with no explanation other than “Newcomer task” on 16 May 2024.

I asked the question “How can the removal of information be described as a newcomer task?”. I have since been accused of making an unreferenced removal. How can this occur, and just what is a “Newcomer task”?

When this is sorted out please tak a look at Abernethy Road, where I asked a similar question and have not received any response. Downsize43 (talk) 05:16, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Downsize43: Those "Newcomer task" tags link to this page which should explain more thoroughly than I will be able to do here. Essentially, they are edits by new editors made to pages tagged as needing cleanup. It isn't an endorsement of the edit in any way, it is just intended to flag that the editor is new and was brought to that article rather than finding it on their own. Tollens (talk) 05:21, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll additionally note that the edit of 15 May on Abernethy Road didn't remove text and then replace it with identical text, it instead added two citations. Tollens (talk) 05:24, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also on Highway 1 (Queensland), you may have been looking at the wrong diff. The edit flagged as a newcomer task did not remove any information – the edit removing information was another editor undoing the previous "newcomer task" edit because it was unsourced. Tollens (talk) 05:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Downsize43. My first observation is that newcomers often make mistakes, and that is not surprising. I suggest that you read Wikipedia:Growth Team features which explains newcomer tasks in great detail. If you still have concerns, then Wikipedia talk:Growth Team features is probably the best place to discuss them. Cullen328 (talk) 05:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Finally found something on Archive 1. Hardly the best place for it. Urgently need to get it "out there" somewhere and let the world know. Downsize43 (talk) 06:41, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Downsize43: Both your descriptions of what happened in the newcomer task are incorrect so I wonder whether you know how diffs work. In the page history [1], click the "prev" link in the line tagged with "Newcomer task" to get [2]. The left-hand side is before the edit and the right-hand side is after. The edit added this text: The highway is part of the famous "Big Lap" on National Route 1. A Google search shows it's correct but it was unsourced and maybe not important enough for the lead so somebody reverted it in this edit. This time "Newcomer task" is on the left side which is before the edit so the removal is not itself the newcomer task. See more at Help:Diff. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:23, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Whichever way you look at it the fact remains that the replacement of the previously removed text has no reference, therefore it is entitled to be questioned or removed. I was merely questioning why there was no reference for the added “fact”. Downsize43 (talk) 07:22, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Update New Description for Company Profile[edit]

Hi Team,

I want to update Godrej Properties current description. Could you please help me on this? 182.78.53.202 (talk) 06:16, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on what you want to say and whether there is a conflict of interest involved in some way with the company; see also WP:BOSS. It also has to be said that Godrej Properties may have difficulty meeting the general notability guideline in its current form due to an excess of primary sourcing.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:06, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
• On Talk:Godrej Properties, make your edit request(s). Be sure to make it clear that you're an employee of the company that's the subject of the article. -- Hoary (talk) 09:10, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

correcting an error of fact in an article[edit]

In the article on Frederick Russell Burnham, in the "Mexico" section, it describes a presidential summit taking place in 1909. It lists a number of agencies providing security and includes the FBI. The FBI did not exist in 1909. 2600:6C40:5800:4BD:7C19:89AF:F8E1:243E (talk) 15:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Changing infobox to...?[edit]

So I'm in a bit of a conundrum here. I wanted to update Topps but apparently, it was acquired by Fanatics in 2022. How would I go around changing it? Is it a subsidiary now? Klinetalkcontribs 15:59, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you want to find out if Topps is a subsidiary or how to update the infobox? this suggests that Topps is a subsidiary. TSventon (talk) 18:41, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon Update the infobox to a subsidiary, seems complicated for a first time affair so some guidance would be helpful. Klinetalkcontribs 00:42, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Kline, the infobox pages are usually helpful. I checked Template:Infobox company and found
"type
Type of ownership in the company (not their legal form of incorporation), wiki-linked where appropriate. To list percentages owned of a private company, use the ownership parameter. Available types:
Private
Public
Subsidiary
Division"
So Topps could be a division or a subsidiary.
If you want help finding information about the company you could try Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities. TSventon (talk) 05:29, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Map alignment[edit]

@Danny lost: They are both at the right margin for me. Where do you see them and what is your browser? "class=notpageimage" ended in the wrong place because there was a wrong ]]. I have removed it.[4] PrimeHunter (talk) 22:36, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you.
I saw this on Chrome, both pc and mobile. On mobile I use the monobook style w/ the option "Enable responsive mode (Adapt layout to screen size on mobile) - on. Maybe it's turning it off that helped? When logged off, on mobile both maps are center-page. But I guess this is a default override behaviour?
trespassers william (talk) 11:36, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Danny lost: It's apparently a feature of responsive mode. If the window is deemed too narrow to get a good layout by placing text to the left of an image then float right is ignored. It doesn't matter whether location map templates were used. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:02, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

Hi!

I am creating my profile on Wiki and I cannot upload a picture I took myself and own - there should be no issue but I receive a notification (We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia). Can you help please?

Jana Jana Koci (talk) 02:17, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not quite sure what exactly did you mean by "profile" here. If you meant User Page, which is a page that tells other editors about your activities on Wikipedia, then personal photos are not necessary. If you meant a Wikipedia article, however, please note that creating an article about yourself or anyone/anything related to you is strongly discouraged.
I see that you've already uploaded a photo of yourself. If that's the image in question, I think it is ready to be used already. I would agree with the notification in that it is hard to tell that you took the photo all by yourself. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 03:25, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jana Koci, you have created a draft for an article about yourself. This is not a good idea: please read and digest Wikipedia:Autobiography. -- Hoary (talk) 07:57, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mabel Normand[edit]

Hello, I am great-nephew to Mabel Normand and I have been promoting my great aunt Mabel’s career and life for 50yrs of my 75. The biography which appears in Wikipedia mention the same old hash. I have had her first biography published in FILMS IN REVIEW Sept 1974. I have given interviews about her life & career and also give talks and know a considerable amount of information from the family point of view and our own resources which haven’t seen light of day. I would like to write something about my great aunt which comes from my knowledge of those facts. In the present biography in Wikipedia things are mentioned like the Broadway Musical Mack & Mabel to which I contributed to the Librettist, The Stevie Nix song MabelNormand but my public protest is not indicated. Can you tell me how I can legitimately have a say in this biography. It is not entirely accurate nor does it give a fair look at Mabel’s contribution as an early pioneer of motion pictures. Instead it sadly dwells on the negative incidents and not enough on her positive contributions or her private personal happiness events of life nor her deep convictions for fairness in life for the poor. There is no mention of her charitable acts to support orphans and her deeply held religious convictions. These are facts of her life which are as important as the same old rehash. Also Mabel was christened Mabel not Ambel and her father was Claude not Clod. Where do people get this nonsense from? I would like to write the story as according to the facts we her family have. Personally I deeply offended at having to endure any longer this bullying scandal invented in Hollywood Babylon after her death. As her blood relative I have every right to have my say and I would be grateful for your help and advice. The biography in Wikipedia as it stands is not fully factual and has become more fantasised each time it is edited. Who is the person editing it now. At one point I had through Wikipedia the choice to review what was written or contributed by the writer of the time about 5 years ago. What has happened to being able to contact the editor directly. As a living relative I would like to be included in the mini bio as I have seen in other bio’s. with thanks for your help and understanding in this matter Yours sincerely Stephen Normand Great-Nephew of Mabel Normand Stephen Great-Nephew of Mabel Normand (talk) 15:23, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The way Wikipedia works is that all content is based on what reliable sources have already written about a subject, we can't base content on your personal experience. However, it does sound as if you have done some press yourself, so that could possibly be used as a basis for some article content. Obviosuly you have a conflict of interest here, so the way for you to contribute would be to suggest changes at Talk:Mabel Normand. @Petrichor2.0 The draft now has the previous decline notices restored. There is now a big blue box which would allow it to be re-submitted to review. However, you should not do that until you have updated the draft to address the concerns of the previous reviewers. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:23, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your answer, I really appreciate it. I have been perfecting the article for year now, adding notable sources and addressing the issues previewers found. Hopefully, it will be to their liking now. Petrichor2.0 (talk) 17:27, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Petrichor2.0, your draft is overtly promotional and shot through with non-neutral phrases. It needs heavy editing to bring it into compliance with the Neutral point of view, which is a core content policy. Cullen328 (talk) 18:29, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
An unreferenced sentence such as He is recognized for his musicianship, substantial lyrical work and charismatic stage personality (who says so?) is blatantly promotional and completely unacceptable. Everything in the article must be credited to a reliable independent source. Shantavira|feed me 08:41, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Petrichor2.0 Against my advice, you have re-submitted the draft and I predict it will be declined again. Whole sections (e.g. "Influences") are uncited, which is against the policies for biographies of living people because of lack of verification. The other comments made above are also still relevant. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:50, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've given Petrichor's draft an edit. I don't know if the subject meets notability, but at least it is not promotional anymore. Zanahary (talk) 02:32, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I see it, and also on Alexander von Humboldt. The error messages are generated by User:Trappist the monk/HarvErrors.js. The documentation for that says "This is a "wrong section" error; You included short footnote Anderson inline, and there is a valid full citation for it in the bottom matter, but it's in the wrong section, such as "Further reading". It should be in either "Bibliography", or "Works cited" (which must be a level two section heading). Dark orange by default." As far as I can see it should not be showing on these pages. Ping @Trappist the monk: DuncanHill (talk) 22:33, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not see the messages that you are complaining about. I'm using the latest version of Chrome and have looked at the offending articles with it and with ms Edge. It has been said here that the messages are not appearing in the Opera browser so that suggests that this may be a Firefox-only issue.

I can't find the search box on the home page. Can you help me Alanwexler2 (talk) 22:00, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming that you're referring to the English Wikipedia homepage, the search box is on the top right for desktop, or would appear after tapping the magnifier icon for mobile webpage. If you still can't find the searchbox, you can still search with Google by typing site:en.wikipedia.org after your search phrase. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 23:20, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Alanwexler2: As you're a new user and it doesn't appear you're editing from a mobile device, the search field should be at the top of the page in the centre. If you can't see it, assuming you're using a Windows computer, you can make it active by using the key combination Alt+⇧ Shift+F. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:13, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I want to propose a mass renaming of ALL Chinese train stations - how do I do so?[edit]

Since the WP:COMMONNAME of Chinese train stations is now the pinyin of the cardinal direction rather than the cardinal direction (e.g. "Hangzhoudong Railway Station" instead of "Hangzhou East railway station", "Shanghainan Railway Station" instead of "Shanghai South railway station"), I would like to move all the articles of train stations across China as such. However, there must be thousands of articles that I would have to change. Where can I propose this change? Félix An (talk) 01:11, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An RFC is probably your best bet. You might want to notify relevant Wikiprojects like WikiProject Trains or WikiProject China. Alternatively, if you're 100% sure that it's not controversial, you could use ; the documentation has more information on how to do multiple pages. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:33, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Félix An, maybe I was sleepy, but it took me some time to work out what you were saying. But I imagine that you mean this: "Since the English name used by China Railway for any Chinese train station consisting of a place name plus cardinal direction now doesn't use the place name in pinyin plus a cardinal direction in English (such as 'Hangzhou East railway station') but instead renders the cardinal direction too in pinyin (such as 'Hangzhoudong railway station'), ..." I suppose you'll either have to provide evidence that the latter really are the common names, or have to argue that one or more other factors should outweigh the criterion of commonness. -- Hoary (talk) 04:32, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's interesting, but likely controversial, especially when there are Chinese OTAs such as trip.com are using the English cardinal directions rather than pinyin. Do open a discussion first before doing or requesting for the mass move. Using the Chinese cardinal directions is definitely WP:OFFICIAL at the very least though, as reflected on the 12306 app. – robertsky (talk) 06:12, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Brussels-midi is a redirect to Brussels-South railway station, but Paris Gare du Nord is a redirect to Gare du Nord, so there's no consistent policy here. (There are direct trains to both from London. In my experience my fellow Brits refer to them by their French names.) Maproom (talk) 06:18, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this is going to go through, but generally you'd want to make a post on WP:NCZH, MOS:ZH, or both. Remsense 06:22, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

how to create a wikipedia page[edit]

How do i create a wikipedia page for myself Tanaaz Bhatia (talk) 05:11, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tanaaz Bhatia, you mean, a page about yourself? If this is what you mean, you do not create such a page. Please read Wikipedia:Autobiography. (Attempts are not actually prohibited, but they usually fail, after wasting various people's time.) -- Hoary (talk) 05:31, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If empty[edit]

Can someone please help me edit a template using if empty. if parameter |template= is empty, the word "article" need to pop up. example:

{{template|}|article |article}}

it previews like article note: the parameter |template= is a link. MAL MALDIVE (talk) 15:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps this instead?
{{#if:{}|}}}|template|article}}
article

You haven't indiacted the name of the page you can't edit, so all we can do is guess, but as a brand-new account you are not autoconfirmed so the issue is probably page protection of some sort. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 18:40, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So you've already said at Talk:Primo Villanueva, Denecof. Good, that's where to say it. But you need to cite a reliable source for saying so. -- Hoary (talk) 23:46, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Source Reliability[edit]

Hi all, I'm working on a draft for a grade-II listed factory (here for anybody interested). I was wondering if someone could look at this pdf source and give their thoughts on its reliability. It covers events which are otherwise difficult to find elsewhere, but editorial oversight and the company's incentives to produce the report are questionable. Pahunkat (talk) 22:45, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Biased sources can still be reliable for facts. Section 6, which lays out the consultancy's argumentation regarding development of the site, is probably too biased to cite, but the rest of the report doesn't seem problematic in my opinion. Folly Mox (talk) 23:16, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How does one add a Wikipedia entry for, say, a new book series or its fictional characters? 92.25.136.63 (talk) 01:59, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Does the book/series meet these guidelines for inclusion? Zanahary (talk) 02:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fictional characters are notable only when reliable, published sources that are entirely independent of the book, the author and the publisher devote significant attention to the fictional character. Not passing mentions, but delving deeply. Cullen328 (talk) 04:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I need help from a Wikitable wizard[edit]

Hello!
I'm working on Sikidy and want to copy a table from a source. The table has some complicated headers, with some nesting. Would anyone be willing to help me out with them? I can't seem to figure out how to do them. Below are the header rows alone (which in the wikitable I would want to all be shaded dark, as headers are)

Thank you very much! Zanahary (talk) 02:15, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With visual editing, you'll need to have a 3×5 header, and select the cells to be merged to form the long cells. As for shading, switch to source editing and change "|" of each cell to "!". You can copy the following table:

Paragraph rendering in VisualEditor as a single template block[edit]

The first paragraph of Kangina, when opened in Visual Editor, renders as a single template block. Why is this? Is there a fix? Thanks! Zanahary (talk) 02:53, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What should this article's title be?[edit]

Hi there, I want to write an article about Komatsu's surface mining excavators, however, am unsure what to name the article title. The model series starts from PC2000 and goes to PC8000. Why can't I name it Komatsu PC-series excavators? Because all of their other models use the PC prefix, except for their surface mining excavators all models are numbers in the thousands. Any suggestions? Best, X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 05:58, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
